A Texas man who was kayaking on a McCurtain County river died Friday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Gary D. Burton, 64, was kayaking on the Mountain Fork River three miles east of Broken Bow shortly after noon when the craft tipped over and sent him into the water, the OHP reported. Burton, of Quinlan, Texas, was wearing a personal floatation device and began to swim back to the kayak when he "just stopped," troopers said. A witness pulled Burton out of the water and attempted to revive him, but he never recovered, the OHP reported. Troopers described the death as a "drowning incident" but added that a medical examiner will determine whether a medical issue was involved.
