Although business travel is on the rise again, companies are expecting employees to wring even greater efficiency and productivity from their business trips. Unfortunately, even the most seasoned road warrior can run into hurdles when traveling for business.

Here are five common challenges facing business travelers and technology solutions that can help alleviate these issues and keep travelers productive.

1. Airport Security

Issue: Going through security is consistently one of the greatest pain points for business travelers. There always seem to be delays and adjustments in protocol, so it can be hard for frequent travelers to keep up with the changing tide.

Tech Solution: My TSA is a real-time operating app, and it comes with features like security guidelines, wait-time estimates, and information on flight delays. With this app, you can view weather conditions at any airport as well as provide the TSA with feedback about your checkpoint experiences. The most raved-about feature is ?Can I Bring,? which clarifies for users what they?re able to carry on the plane.

2. Flight Delays

Background: Business travelers are accustomed to flight delays. They happen all the time. But how can you be productive while you wait?

Tech Solution: App in the Air helps you fly more intelligently, in spite of issues like flight delays. With this app, you can find the best food and coffee in the airport. Use it to determine the best ways to spend your free time and to find free wireless internet connections. App in the Air also checks you into your flight and helps you keep friends and family updated by sharing flight status information.

3. Health and Fitness On the Road

Background: The life of a road warrior is not necessarily the healthiest. Business travelers are constantly dining out and rarely have time to squeeze in a workout, so maintaining a diet or exercise regimen can be challenging.

Tech Solution: The yumPower iPhone app helps you find restaurants and meals nearby that are nutritious and delicious. All restaurants and menu selections on this app are approved by Healthy Dining?s team of registered dietitians. Special food considerations include ?sodium savvy, ?calorie wise,? ?fiber focus,? ?lotsa fruits and veg,? ?diabetes friendly? and ?kids livewell.? All restaurant and food listings have a rating scale. Just look for the highest number of ?yums? for the best-rated places and meals. You can also cast your ?yum? vote when you find a place or tasty item you like.

4. Prescription Emergencies

Background: It?s so easy to forget to take a prescription, let alone refill it. Add to this the difficult situation of being in a new city, away from your usual pharmacy, and you?ve got a business traveler recipe for disaster.

Tech Solution: With the Many Professional Pharmacy Pocket Rx app you can order your refill prescriptions from your mobile device. The free application has account creation capability, where users can create a profile and access all of their current prescriptions for refill. With an account, you can enter data in three ways. These include Quick Refill to manually enter the information, profile login to choose from a list, or by scanning the bar code of your medicine bottle. Find the nearest store by using the GPS functionality so your prescription woes never slow you down.

5. Losing Your Luggage

Background: As road warriors know, anything can happen when you?re on the road, whether you realize you?ve left your suitcase in your cab as it drives away, or your airline appears to have misplaced your checked items. Sometimes you have to say goodbye to your personal effects in the interest of time and restock on clothes and other supplies at your new destination.

Tech Solution: The Goodzer: Local-Shopping app is a user-friendly personal shopping assistant. Whatever item you?re looking to buy, Goodzer shows you all the nearby stores that carry the product. It displays the price, availability, and directions to the store. You can even order the item online or save it to a shopping list. The app is also capable of organizing searches by the users? result preference, including price, distance, and store name. With more than a half-million local store listings across the U.S., business travelers will be able to find what they need in a timely fashion.

Female suicide bomber identified in Russia

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? Russian police say they have identified the female suicide bomber who killed an influential Muslim leader in the volatile province of Dagestan.

Said Afandi was a leader of a Sufi Muslim brotherhood whose followers include thousands of officials, clerics and businessmen. The 85-year-old Afandi was killed Tuesday along with six other people in the village of Chirkei by a bomber disguised as a pilgrim who visited his house.

The mystical Muslim orders of Sufis, popular in Dagestan and neighboring provinces of Russia's multiethnic Caucasus region, are opposed to radical and militant Islamist groups that mushroomed there after the Soviet collapse.

Police in Dagestan said Wednesday that the bomber was Aminat Kurbanova, a 30-year-old resident of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala. The Interfax news agency claimed she was married to an Islamist militant.

Federal court blocks Texas voting maps

By NBC News wire services

Correction: The first version of this story and its headline incorrectly described the issue decided by the federal court.

A federal court has found evidence of discrimination in Texas voting maps drawn by the state's Republican-controlled Legislature.

By holding that the redistricting discriminates against black and Hispanic voters, the court effectively killed the new districts before they could take effect for the Nov. 6 presidential election.?November's election will instead use interim maps drawn by a federal court in San Antonio.?

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued the ruling.

The U.S. District Court in Washington ruled in a lengthy opinion Tuesday that state prosecutors failed to show Texas lawmakers did not draw congressional and state Senate district maps "without discriminatory purposes."

Luis Vera, an attorney for the League of United Latin American Citizens, called the ruling "better late than never" and a win for his and other minority rights groups that sued the state over the maps.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott immediately vowed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Obama administration in 2011 blocked the maps, arguing they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a law designed to protect the voting rights of minorities, primarily blacks in Southern states.?

A friend taught me a crazy life hack this weekend.

Let's say you're having friends over and you want to play some tunes from your iPhone, but you don't own speakers or an iPhone dock. Don't worry; there's a quick fix that's pretty amazing.

Set the iPhone down into a ceramic mug. The sound is amplified tenfold.

Try it! You'll never look back.

Weather most popular free app genre, games paid app

How many apps have you downloaded to your smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently published the results of a survey by goo Research into smartphone apps, with the focus of the report being on the number and types of downloads.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 9th of August 2012 1,076 members of the goo Research online monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53,2% of the sample were male, 16.7% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.7% in their thirties, 16.0% in their forties, 15.4% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

The introduction to the survey mentions a notion I have too, that when there is a choice of a free and a paid version of the same app, it is better to pay just to avoid the in-app advertisements. For my part, I am still to play Angry Birds, and one of the reasons I won?t touch the Android version is that I have heard that the advertisements actually block the gameplay. It?s also worth mentioning that the carrier au by KDDI offers for a reasonable monthly fee all the apps you can download from their own store.

I?ve paid for exactly one app, Paper Camera, when it was on sale for 40 yen last year. All my five or six other downloaded apps are specially chosen not to have any in-game advertisements; if you?re a Sudoku fan, I can most heartily recommend Andoku for all your numerical fun, and QuickPic to replace the pretty useless stock Android gallery app.

Research results

First of all, 406 people, or 37.7% of the sample, were smartphone users; they were asked the following.

Q1: About how many apps have you downloaded to your main smartphone? Exclude those you have since deleted. (Sample size=406)

51 to 60 2.0%
61 to 70 1.7%
71 to 80 0.7%
81 to 90 0.2%
91 to 100 1.0%

Music 39.2%

Next, 250 people, or 62.6%, had never downloaded a paid app. Of the 156 people, or 38.4% of the smartphone owners, who had paid for apps, the most common number was just one, 48 people or 11.8%, then 3 at 28 people or 6.9%. These app buyers were asked the following.

Q3: What genres of paid apps have you downloaded to your main smartphone? (Sample size=156, multiple answer)

Healthy lifestyle reduces risk of hypertension by two thirds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Healthy behaviours regarding alcohol, physical activity, vegetable intake and body weight reduce the risk of hypertension by two thirds, according to research presented at the ESC Congress August 27.

The findings were presented by Professor Pekka Jousilahti from National Institute for Health and Welfare.

According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in the world, contributing annually to over 7 million deaths (about 15% of all deaths). Therefore, prevention of hypertension is essential to improving health and preventing morbidity and mortality, both in developing and developed countries.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether five major cardiovascular disease related lifestyle factors -- smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, obesity and consumption of vegetables -- predict the future increase of blood pressure and development of clinical hypertension, and need for antihypertensive drug treatment. This large prospective population-based cohort study included 9,637 Finnish men and 11,430 women who were 25 to 74 years of age and free of hypertension during the baseline measurements (1982-2002). Healthy lifestyle factors were defined as:

(1) not smoking,

(2) alcohol consumption less than 50g per week,

(3) leisure time physical activity at least 3 times per week,

(4) daily consumption of vegetables, and

(5) normal weight (BMI<25kg/m2).

Data on the development of hypertension during the follow-up period were obtained from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland register of people entitled to special reimbursement for antihypertensive drugs. During a mean follow-up of 16 years, 709 men and 890 women developed hypertension.

Smoking was omitted from the final analysis. Professor Jousilahti said: "Even though smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it was not associated with the development of hypertension in our analyses, which is in accordance with previous studies."

The four remaining healthy lifestyle factors were included in the analysis. Hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0 (the reference group), 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were calculated after adjusting for age, year of entering the study, education, and smoking.

The hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were 1.00, 0.74, 0.51, 0.34, and 0.33 for men, and 1.00, 0.89, 0.68, 0.41, and 0.37 for women. "The risk of hypertension was only one third among those having all four healthy lifestyle factors compared to those having none," said Professor Jousilahti. "Even having one to three healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension remarkably. For example having two healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension by nearly 50% in men and by more than 30% in women."

"Our analysis suggests that adherence to healthy lifestyle factors may have more of an impact on risk of hypertension in men than women," he added. "This could be because of the stronger association of obesity and alcohol consumption with the risk of hypertension in men than in women."

"Four modifiable lifestyle factors: alcohol consumption, physical activity, consumption of vegetables and keeping normal weight have a remarkable effect on the development of hypertension," said Professor Jousilahti. "Lifestyle modification has a huge public health potential to prevent hypertension. While our research suggests that lifestyle modification may produce greater reductions in hypertension in men than women, it also shows large benefits in women, and adherence to all four healthy lifestyle factors had a nearly similar effect in both sexes. Both men and women should take steps towards a healthier lifestyle to decrease their risk of hypertension."

He concluded: "Our study was focused on prevention of hypertension and therefore included subjects who did not have hypertension at baseline. But the results should apply to the treatment of patients with hypertension, who can reduce their blood pressure by modifying the four lifestyle factors alone, or by making these modifications while taking blood pressure lowering medication."

Qatar's construction sector poised for further growth | Qatar Business ...

Qatar?s construction industry is set to maintain its top position among the region?s best performing markets with researcher Business Monitor (BMI) forecasting a 9.5% year-on-year sectoral growth in 2012.?BMI estimates that Qatar?s construction sector grew by 9.3% in real terms in 2011.

In its third quarter, 2012 infrastructure report, BMI said construction and energy projects worth $150bn are in the pipeline, which are being implemented to support Qatar National Vision 2030 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

?With vast hydrocarbon wealth inflating public coffers and a business environment offering stability at a time of wider regional unrest, we expect Qatar?s construction market to be regarded as a safe haven for the region?s investors,? BMI said.?

Last year, HE the Minister of Economy and Finance, Yousef Hussein Kamal, said Qatar?s spending on infrastructure was expected to reach $150bn ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, in line with the country?s 2030 Vision. A series of infrastructure projects are in the pipeline, including a $1bn transport corridor project in Doha, $20bn investment on roads, $25bn investment in the railway sector, $15.5bn to be spent on a new airport, $4bn to be invested in stadiums; $8bn to be spent on a deepwater seaport besides the construction of many new hotels that will add thousands of rooms.

In July last year, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) had announced a road construction plan to connect Ras Laffan Industrial City with University Road and the Shamal Road, providing three lanes in each direction. The plans were unveiled as part of a larger scheme to build roads around the western and northern borders of the Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The first phase of the Ras Qirtas energy plant was completed in August 2011, BMI said. The $4bn plant will generate 2,730MW of power and some 63mn gallons of desalinated water.

The plant will supply the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) under a 25-year contract. The production will then be used to feed the local network or the GCC electricity link-up system. The development marks the commissioning of the biggest electricity generation plant in the country.?Work has also begun on the $1.37bn Doha Festival City project, the report said.

This is just one of a series of flagship projects that have got under way in Qatar since the country was awarded the FIFA 2022 World Cup in December 2010.

?Preparations for the FIFA 2022 World Cup will effect major changes in Qatar?s infrastructure industry. While major international players undoubtedly stand to win from big-ticket stadia and infrastructure projects, local contractors also stand to benefit substantially, either through partnering with foreign firms or undertaking a smaller project, of which there are many,? BMI said.

Lack of sleep found to be a new risk factor for aggressive breast cancers

Lack of sleep found to be a new risk factor for aggressive breast cancers [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Aug-2012

First-of-its-kind study published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment

Lack of sleep is linked to more aggressive breast cancers, according to new findings published in the August issue of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment by physician-scientists from University Hospitals Case Medical Center's Seidman Cancer Center and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University.

Led by Cheryl Thompson, PhD, the study is the first-of-its-kind to show an association between insufficient sleep and biologically more aggressive tumors as well as likelihood of cancer recurrence. The research team analyzed medical records and survey responses from 412 post-menopausal breast cancer patients treated at UH Case Medical Center with Oncotype DX, a widely utilized test to guide treatment in early stage breast cancer by predicting likelihood of recurrence.

All patients were recruited at diagnosis and asked about the average sleep duration in the last two years. Researchers found that women who reported six hours or less of sleep per night on average before breast cancer diagnosis had higher Oncotype DX tumor recurrence scores. The Oncotype DX test assigns a tumor a recurrence score based on the expression level of a combination of 21 genes.

"This is the first study to suggest that women who routinely sleep fewer hours may develop more aggressive breast cancers compared with women who sleep longer hours," said Dr. Thompson, who is Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and lead author. "We found a strong correlation between fewer hours of sleep per night and worse recurrence scores, specifically in post-menopausal breast cancer patients. This suggests that lack of sufficient sleep may cause more aggressive tumors, but more research will need to be done to verify this finding and understand the causes of this association."

The authors point out that while the correlation of sleep duration and recurrence score was strong in post-menopausal women, there was no correlation in pre-menopausal women. It is well known that there are different mechanisms underlying pre-menopausal and post-menopausal breast cancers. The data suggest that sleep may affect carcinogenic pathway(s) specifically involved in the development of post-menopausal breast cancer, but not pre-menopausal cancer.

"Short sleep duration is a public health hazard leading not only to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, but also cancer," said Li Li, MD, PhD, a study co-author and family medicine physician in the Department of Family Medicine at UH Case Medical Center and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. "Effective intervention to increase duration of sleep and improve quality of sleep could be an under-appreciated avenue for reducing the risk of developing more aggressive breast cancers and recurrence."

What Mitt Romney needs to achieve at GOP national convention

Mitt Romney needs to keep the focus on the travails of the US economy under Obama, and to humanize himself by telling his personal story, Republican analysts said during the Sunday talk shows, in advance of this week's GOP national convention.

Mitt Romney?s task at the Republican National Convention this week will be to keep the focus on the struggles of the US economy under President Obama and to tell an appealing personal story about his life and accomplishments, according to conservative politicos and commentators speaking during appearances on the Sunday talk shows.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Mr. Romney will also strive, they said, to steer the conversation clear of political land mines such as the recent "legitimate rape" comment by Rep. Todd Akin (R) of Missouri.

Mr. Romney will show he?s ?a good, decent man who gave away his father?s inheritance, and everything he did, he did to success,? said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on CBS?s "Face the Nation." ?I think both Republican and Democratic parents are wishing for their kids' success and the American dream and not the glass-half-empty America that President Obama is trying to sell this country."

Recent polling data show the vast distance Romney needs to make up against Mr. Obama in terms of connecting with voters.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted in August shows Obama with a 58 percent to 23 percent lead in being judged ?easygoing and likable,? a 52 to 24 percent lead in issues concerning women, and, perhaps most important, a 52 percent to 30 percent advantage in being perceived as caring about average people.

A step toward introducing Mitt Romney, Family Man, was evident in a joint interview of Mitt and Ann Romney aired on "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace."

The couple laughed often, with Mitt looking on admiringly as Ann answered several sharp questions from Mr. Wallace about her political disagreements with her husband (she demurred) and their feelings about Planned Parenthood (to which Ann had donated in the past and which Mitt has said would lose its federal funding under a Romney administration.)

The two shared a big laugh when Ann said she didn?t weigh in on policy matters.

?I didn?t know she didn?t give advice on policy,? Mitt said with a broad smile.

Ann Romney even offered her advice for shopping at bulk retailer Costco: ?You take a sharp right, go way down to the back of the store, shop the outside of the aisles.?

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Internet ...

In the old days folks inquisitive about the market had to size up the history and the way ahead for stocks by going over mountains of documentation. You'll find that stockmarket trading software can make your activities more successful, it could be the answer that you're looking for to help turbo-charge your revenues. The PC time we are in permits us to seriously benefit from stockmarket dealing software. When you start looking round for stock dealing software you'll find that there are a lot of them out there to make a choice from. You then place a market order with your internet broker for the specified number of shares you wish to purchase. So what the stockmarket trading software is really doing is taking the conjecture out of stock market dealing.

The stockmarket dealing software will then continue to process info and monitor the stock pick it gave you till it?s sure you can sell the stock for a decent profit. But there's always that tiny probability that share costs will abruptly drop prior to getting an opportunity to sell them, here's where your stoploss order saves the day. All you must do is leave the software to run for an hour a day, wait for a stock pick and then buy that stock using your internet stockbroker account, then selling the stock for a decent profit when the software tells you to. These systems scan the market steadily for the best up and coming stocks. Stocks are influenced daily by foreseeable information and arithmetic. This implies you immediately know which stocks are making a gain.

You can purchase inexpensive early and sell higher later earning tons of bucks each day or thousands of bucks each week on your investment with the best stock market trading system. The advantages of an automatic securities trading robotic system are giant.

I invest fairly conservatively, but my largest gain so far ( on one currency cross ) was over $5000. And I used Fibonacci?s ?golden ratio? to find the right price levels at which to trade off. Both work miracles, all you have got to do is input 1 or 2 numbers and drag your waves over market graphs, and it shows you the key p.c. levels at which to trade successfully with that fund. You can download SpiralTrader for nothing there?s also VTTrader, which my neighbour uses and endorses. It isn't difficult, and it isn't sorcery ? it is simply a method to see patterns and establish when they are going to repeat. They will not regret anything, and then just move on to the subsequent trade. There's not one single methodology that works one hundred percent of the time. If they didn't follow the technique, then they'd pose questions ,eg, ?Why did I not follow the plan?? Infrequently folks would lose focus, and this is when folk take five from the stockmarket. Never trade when you're irritated or irritated because you'll make dumb calls.

How to Join the Ranks of the Digital ?Supercreatives:? An Interview ...

Fast Company named Leslie Bradshaw one among The Most Influential Women in Tech last year. Her Los Angeles-based agency, once known exclusively for its data-rich infographics and social data-driven interactive displays, is now a leading force in content development and visual storytelling with clients like Google, Nike and American Express.

CCO spoke to Bradshaw about what it takes to be a rising star in the competitive world of digital supercreatives, how to work with a creative agency and why some content breaks through the clutter.

CCO: How do you ensure your clients are not jumping straight to execute tactics (e.g. infographics) instead of thinking strategically?

LB: Thanks for asking this question ? it?s what helps us vet whether or not we want to work with a client. If a client comes to us with what we call ?tactical enthusiasm,? we typically turn the project down. If someone believes an infographic is going to solve all their communication needs, or that an infographic is going to go viral, we know we don?t have the right match. We want our clients to look holistically and strategically over all communications goals, and study how visual storytelling and data-driven storytelling fit within that mix, and within what mediums.

Some clients will come and say, ?We really liked your infographic. Will you make us one?? Those projects aren?t that interesting to us because, yes, of course we could make the infographic, but we need to keep pushing ourselves as an agency to do larger, more programmatic engagements. What we?re releasing now are projects that are much bigger, have a longer burn and tend to explore multimedia like video, analog, print, mural and reporting. Our skills transfer in a lot of different directions ? including video, analog, print and murals ? but I like to say just because you have a hammer doesn?t mean everything is a nail.

Now, just because you see an infographic on Mashable doesn?t mean it?s the right solution. In fact, often it means an infographic isn?t the solution because it?s such a crowded, noisy landscape and infographics are very time-intensive. To do them well, you have to do not only primary research, but secondary and tertiary research to produce a definitive story that has never been told. You need to follow a process and have enough data points to make it interesting. Most people don?t have the stomach for that whole process. They have the desire to be recognized by the media and have their voice heard, but data-driven storytelling is not always the best answer.

Infographics are a high-level tactic that is good for educated audiences; they are not actually good for consumer audiences. Consumer audiences are much more likely to share something on Facebook that?s really ?snackable.? Think about Pinterest. Those are the pieces of content we call ?snackable? content ? short, bold statements. If we produce content that has just one or two data points, we call it a data graphic.

We?ve been producing data graphics for clients like Nike and Google over the last three years. We figure out how to produce a lot of interesting content that will be grabbed through Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Instead of investing in a single anchor piece of content like an infographic or video, we?re able to take that budget and apply it to 50 graphics and feed the masses through their social channels for many meals as opposed to one meal. So what we tend to do is, back to your question on strategy, look at overarching, communication goals that clients have, and how can data-driven storytelling and/or visual storytelling be a part of that.

What projects are you proudest of in your career?

I?m proud when we create something that never existed ? projects that are innovative and meaningful. One of my favorites is the C-SPAN video library we completed a few years ago. We were asked to design a better experience for how information ? including 30 years? worth of congressional testimony and other important government files and data ? is sorted and displayed. We won a Peabody for our work together, which was the highest honor we could have received from a very great group of people.

I also have projects that I?m personally interested in, both the outcome and the journey. When I was in high school and college, I wrote papers like, ?Does God exist?? and ?Why are there not more women in leadership roles in business or in politics?? I pursued those questions because I was fascinated by them. Some of the projects you?ll see at JESS3 are personal interests I want to explore visually with my team. On that theme, I?m really proud of our Foursquare ?I Voted? project.

We are always working to figure out how to best deliver a content-oriented experience to the end user, whether interactively, through video, or a piece of static content like an infographic or white paper. We like projects that bring together different sources to say something in a new way, especially those that are complicated and difficult to solve ? like The State of Wikipedia or our work with Amnesty International visualizing 50 years of human rights. We love to look at large data sets and complex topics across a spectrum of time or ideas, then pull them all together to deliver meaning and value.

Some of your clients ? Nike and Google ? are very sophisticated partners. What about companies that just don?t have the same resources and sophistication? How do they play in the big time?

I have two takes on this. One take is you have brands ? our four biggest brand clients are Intel, Nike, Google and American Express ? that have a clear sense of self and a clearly articulated brand. Those brands are so recognizable and people are passionate about them ? to the point where some get the Nike swoosh tattooed on them. With that type of brand, we are focused on ?brand maintenance.? Whereas when we work with Eloqua and Mindjet, we are focused on brand building. Mindjet and Eloqua were not unsophisticated, but they also weren?t at the level of a Nike.

The No. 1 thing we look for when brands like Mindjet or Eloqua come to us is humility. Having the humility to say, ?Hey we don?t know, but we want to learn.? And, ?We don?t want to put so many constraints in place that you can?t do creatively what we?ve seen you do for other people.? Our employees love working on Eloqua and Mindjet, not because they?re big, well-known brands, but because the employees have greater freedom with those brands to express them in new and exciting ways.

That is my No. 1 recommendation: When you come to an expert, a consultant or an agency, you have to have that humility and willingness to offer runway.

When you take on a new client, what do you look for that signals the partnership will be successful?

We look for a clearly demarcated point of contact; someone who is either empowered with decision-making abilities themselves or who can internally ?socialize? ideas and come back to us. We?ve worked with clients where a committee of nine people gets on the phone and the voices are distributed. We come out of it feeling like we?re in the United Nations ? everybody is around the table but no one really has decision-making authority.

We also look for focus. We watch some projects fall out because our point of contact is being splintered and stretched too thin, and it creates a bottleneck. I would say to a CMO, make sure when you are engaging with an agency that you have one single, clearly enunciated, articulated, punctuated point of contact at the onset. Empower that person with decision-making abilities or make clear how she or he fact-find and gather and come to that consensus before coming back to the agency so it isn?t splintered and diluted feedback. And be sure the person has the appropriate time built into every single day to be part of the creative process, giving feedback, giving approvals, brainstorming and driving it forward.

Tell me about some of your favorite apps.

I call myself a ?late-early? adopter because I?m not on the cutting edge. I love Netflix, Hulu and HBO GO to decompress because I don?t have a television. I also love the default Yahoo Finance app that comes with the iPhone. When Facebook and LinkedIn each went public, I tracked the IPOs with that app. I?ve always liked reading about business and economics, and keeping an eye on the markets.

Two or three others that I?ve really been jamming with I love Shazam. I upload a lot of music to my phone from that app. I love Path. I use it like Instagram. There?s a fun, smaller group of people on Path. It?s a little less noisy and higher quality than Facebook, plus I love Path?s photo filters.

And last but not least, Tumblr. There are times when I have an interesting thought or come across a quotation ? something that?s a little more in depth or a little meatier than just a tweet ? and I use Tumblr to talk about it.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I rely on three pillars for inspiration. Pillar No. 1 is entrepreneurship and leadership. I look for entrepreneurial leaders that have been in my shoes at some point building a company, people like Sheryl Sandberg [COO of Facebook]. Seeing how other people are thriving and surviving inspires me.

The second pillar would be social sciences. I have a background in gender studies, anthropology, political science and economics, and they all frame how I think about approaching client problems.

The last pillar is agriculture. My mother comes from a long line of farmers, starting six generations ago coming across the Oregon Trail. Agriculture to me has always meant family, hard work, valuing nature, working long hours to get something done. Agriculture is about the literal nourishment of one?s self and in the work that I do there is a nourishment of the web with content or the nourishment of a client?s goal. It keeps me very grounded; literally and metaphorically. I?m inspired by the hard work my parents put into our farm back in Oregon, and when I?m able to I love to chip in.

I have a younger sister, and she?s a human rights advocate and activist. She works at Amnesty International on the human-trafficking and sex-trafficking issues. Her dedication and compassion also keep me grounded. It?s easy as an entrepreneur to get lost in the stuff swirling around the industry like the Facebook IPO. You have to figure out what we?re really here for. My sister reminds me there are bigger things out there beyond the money; it?s about how you treat people and how you behave as a citizen of this world.

Want to understand what Bradshaw means by ?snackable? visual content? See the data and socially optimized graphics JESS3 has created for brands like Nike and Google, and learn how they use Google+, Facebook and Tumblr to spread these content ?snacks.?

Mitt Romney Talks Convention Speeches?Just Not His Own

POWELL, Ohio - Mitt Romney offered a sarcastic preview of the upcoming convention speeches, though it was President Obama's speech and not his own that he decided to focus on today in Ohio.

"I know the president's going to go to that convention he's going to have all sorts of marvelous things to say," said Romney at a rally alongside his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. "I mean I can almost read his speech now."

"It'll just be, it'll be filled with promises and tell people how wonderful things are, of course they'll have to contrast that with what they know they're experiencing," he said. " But as he lays out all of these wonderful things he's going to do, people are going to stop and say but how are you going to do something different than last time. They've experienced the last four years."

Romney also used protesters who stood nearby screaming "Go Home Romney!" to link President Obama's speech during the 2008 convention to the economic downfall in Europe.

"I happen to hear this faint sound in the distance," said Romney, in front of a crowd of thousands in a local park. "And it- It actually - It actually reminds me a bit of the president's address four years ago, speaking to the convention in Denver because he was speaking in front of those Greek columns, remember that? And this is kind of like the Greek chorus in the background. Everything they do reminds us of Greece and we're not going to Greece we're going to get America back to being America!"

Romney also gave a glimpse into his nighttime reading regime, telling the crowd here that he "pulled out [Obama's] speech last night."

"I'm not kidding, I pulled out his speech that he gave in Denver," he said. "It's really a brilliant speech. He says marvelous things. He just hasn't done them. My guess is a few weeks from now he'll be speaking at the Bank of America Arena - he won't call it that - he'll be in Charlotte. He probably won't put Greek columns up behind him. He won't want to remind us of that either. But he will have all sorts of promises to offer again. He'll tell you how much better things are now, but you know this time we have more than just the words."

On Hugh Hewitt's radio show Friday night, Romney said that his own speech is still being developed, calling it a "work in progress, kind of early stage."

"I'm still working hard," Romney said of his speech, which he is expected to work on at his lakeside home in New Hampshire this weekend.

Romney will address the Republican National Convention on Thursday night.

Parrot Asteroid a Replacement Automotive Stereo Receiver ...

Parrot ar accepted as an organization that muscled into the Bluetooth hands free decision market with a automotive telephone system that worked a full ton higher than Motorola?s then dominant models. the good advantage Parrot offered was voice commands that worked. Most voice controlled technology solely responds to those few those that sound like machines! Since then, Parrot has return up with some stunning devices. together with a radio controlled whirlybird that may be controlled with AN iPhone or iPad.

Parrot?s new Asteroid, a replacement automotive stereo declared at CES 2011 is nearer to the company?s roots. The Asteroid has voice management for hands free calls via its speakers ANd an AM/FM radio. it?s conjointly a hub with three USB inputs in order that you?ll be able to connect in AN MP3 player, good phone, pill laptop or portable computer. One nice irony is that the Asteroid uses mechanical man as its software however is incredibly happy to attach to Apple devices just like the iPod.

An facultative 3G electronic device may be utilized in one in all the USB ports and therefore the unit ships with a GPS electronic device. Use each and it permits the stereo to understand wherever it?s, still as having web access. It will then offer you relevant traffic updates and even flip by flip navigation with the Parrot Maps app.

This slightly strange feature can most likely facilitate those drivers WHO hate to seem aloof from the road for even a flash.

The system is due for unleash in late 2011 however no worth has been given at the time of writing.

Will it succeed?

At first look, the Asteroid appears unneeded. Cars return furnished with stereos and there ar FM transmitters to attach phones and iPods terribly simply. GPS navigation devices are widespread and lots of have hands free decision capability once integrated with a wise phone. At constant time, 3 USB ports, the power to induce traffic updates and navigation, web radio and build hands free calls will definitely attractiveness. on behalf of me it covers all the necessary things i need in automotive. for a few individuals it would simply be an excessive amount of and unnecessarily complicated.
