How whales focus beams of sound

Many marine mammals live in a world shaped by sound - producing clicks to map their underwater environment out of echoes.

Researchers in Hawaii have now discovered just how finely tuned this "echolocation" can be.

The scientists found that toothed whales can focus their beam of sound - pinpointing a target with a narrow stream of clicks to study it in detail.

Their findings are published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Laura Kloepper, a PhD student at the University Hawaii, led the study. She worked with a trained false killer whale - a member of the dolphin family - named Kina, which has been in a bay enclosure at the research institute since 1993.

Kina came to the University of Hawaii's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology when the US Navy closed its Hawaii laboratory.

"The Navy was reducing its animal inventory at that time," Ms Kloepper told BBC Nature. "And rather than risk reintroduction to the wild, the whale was given to [my supervisor] Dr Paul Nachtigall's newly established Marine Mammal Research Program at the University.

"She's a dream to work with; we think she's probably the best echolocator in the world."

"In previous studies, she's managed to distinguish between two objects that differed in width by less than the thickness of a human hair."

Scientists had suspected that this remarkable accuracy was partly due to whales' ability to adjust the focus of their echolocating sound beam.

But Ms Kloepper and her team have carried out the first tests to actually measure the beam when the animal changed focus as an "echolocating task" became more difficult.

The researchers trained Kina to recognise a cylinder of specific dimensions, and to come to the surface and touch a response ball with her "nose" when she recognised it. Every time she identified her cylinder and touched the ball, she received a fish reward.

The researchers then presented Kina with a discrimination task using three different cylinders: the one she was trained to recognise; another with walls almost 1cm (0.39in) thicker and one with walls just 0.2mm (0.008in) thicker than her target cylinder. All three objects were the same length.

On a signal from her trainer, Kina swam into an underwater hoop ready for the test.

"When she swims into the hoop," said Ms Kloepper, "a gate in front of her lifts so she can echolocate the [object] in front of her."

During these trials, the researchers used an array of underwater microphones to measure the beam of sound that Kina produced.

"By recording from several positions, we're able to image the shape (and size) of her beam," Ms Kloepper said.

These images revealed that Kina altered the size of her beam according to how difficult it was to identify the cylinder; she produced a larger beam when the cylinder in front of her was more difficult to distinguish from her target.

The scientists think that when Kina produced this large beam of sound, her melon acted as a responsive acoustic lens - focusing the wide beam down and directing all of the sound at the object of interest.

"This way there's more acoustic energy that she's going to get back from the object she's investigating," explained Ms Kloepper.

"It makes sense because echolocating is how [these animals] make their living, and during deep dives, they have very little light. So this means they can follow and track fish just by using sound," said Ms Kloepper.

The same team's subsequent studies have shown that harbour porpoises probably have this same focusing ability.

Paul Nachtigall, who also took part in the study, explained that as well as adjusting their echolocating beam, Kina was able to alter the sensitivity of her hearing - making it super-sensitive when she was hunting, but "plugging her ears" to block out potentially damaging loud noise.

Dr Nachtigall said that Kina was a "professional researcher".

"She should be the first author on this paper," he told BBC Nature. "She must have about five PhDs and countless publications to her name by now."

I?m getting a divorce and myself and 3 sons are moving to Stratford, ON, Canada from the US.I?m a dual Canadian and US Citizen and Stratford is my hometown, I moved here 7 years ago and had 2 dogs. I could only bring one at a time so I had to leave one with my parents and go back and get him later. Since then they have both died. I now have 7 dogs and 2 cats that I adopted for my sons. Well I only adopted 2 Huskies and well you know how we got more! My main question is will I still have to travel back and forth 9 times to bring my animals to our new home? We are driving and It would be so much easier to take them all at once.

Check if the local regulations allow that many animals in a single houehold.

You can ship them by plane if you can afford it.

I googled and read many sites. There doesn?t seem to be a specific limit to the number of pet dogs or cats that you can bring to Canada.

Pit Bulls are prohibited, but you already knew that, I am sure so your Siberian Huskies are OK. Be sure you follow the rules about "commercial purposes" when coming with so many dogs as spelled out in the rules and you should have no problems.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency does have some general health regulation rules that you will have to obey, though. Read here:

As long as they?re pets, you can bring them. If you can fit them all in a vehicle, I can?t imagine why you wouldn?t be allowed to bring them all at once. You might want to bring vet records or something to prove they are simply pets and not being used in a commercial enterprise. It is, oddly enough, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency which controls animal imports. Go to their website, look for Animals on the right of the opening page, then Pet Imports on the left of the page that takes you to.

You better check how many dogs you can have in your new home. Many jurisdictions only let you have 3 adult dogs unless you have a kennel licence. You might get away with having 7 Chihuahuas if they don?t leave the house much, but 7 Huskies bounding around in the yard are sure to be noticed.

U.S. 'Free Enterprise' Employer-Based Health Insurance System Is ...

The health-insurance mega-corps could solve the crisis tomorrow - all they would have to do is insure everyone

In the upside-down world of the tea party GOP, the individual mandate ? a solution to the health insurance crisis that was created by an ultra right-wing think tank that requires all working Americans to be covered by private health insurance ? is ?socialism.?

That?s right. In the topsy-turvy minds of Fox-watchers, Dittoheads and teavangelical neo-Confederates, a system that would create as many as 50 million new customers for giant private health-insurance corporations is not capitalism on steroids, it is the stuff of godless communism.

In the United States in which we collectively pay for socialist public schools and universities; socialist public hospitals; socialist fire, police and emergency services; socialist highway, airport and seaport construction ? as well as socialist pensions (Social Security) and socialist health-care coverage for seniors (Medicare)

In reality, the ?socialist? approach to health-care coverage is a single-payer system ? which also happens to be the system deployed by most industrialized democracies in the world, including all our major competitors in Europe and Asia. These countries do not require their automakers, software companies, real-estate developers and the rest to pay for their employees? insurance ? which means that the owners of those companies aren?t forced to inflate the price of their goods and services to cover the cost of their employees? insurance. That cost is born by the citizens of the country, collectively.

That is socialism. It is similar to the ?socialist? systems we have in the United States in which we collectively pay for socialist public schools and universities; socialist public hospitals; socialist fire, police and emergency services; socialist highway, airport and seaport construction as well as socialist pensions (Social Security) and socialist health-care coverage for seniors (Medicare).

For three years, tea party Republicans have promised that they will repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it, ostensibly with a ?free enterprise? solution. The fallacy here ? the upside-down absurdity in this argument ? is that the system we have now is a ?free enterprise? system, and, as this new study from the National Institute for Health Care Reform [PDF] shows, it is collapsing before our eyes:

Between 2007 and 2010, the share of children and working-age adults in the United States with employer-sponsored health insurance dropped 10 percentage points from 63.6 percent to 53.5 percent, according to a new national study by the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC). The key factor driving the sharp decline was the enormous loss of employment during the Great Recession, which officially started in December 2007 and ended in June 2009. The proportion of the population younger than 65 with no workers in the family spiked 10 percentage points between 2007 and 2010, from 21.6 percent to 31.6 percent. The decline in employer coverage disproportionately affected young adults, people with a high school education or less, and people employed in small firms.

Even when employment rebounds to pre-recession levels, a return to previous levels of employer-sponsored health insurance is unlikely. Well before the start of the recession, a steady decline of employer health coverage was underway with fewer firms offering coverage and fewer workers taking up coverage?likely because of rising health care costs.

Paul Krugman:

What this says is that the system that has provided workable insurance coverage to many (but not enough) Americans is coming apart at the seams. And this in turn means that if health reform goes down, we?re going to be looking at a wave of misery spreading across the land.

Kevin Drum:

Most Americans simply have no clue how bizarre it is that we rely on employers to provide health insurance for most people. We?ve all grown up in this sytem, so it seems completely normal. But it?s not. It happened through a weird combination of historical accidents, and it makes no sense. Why should an airplane manufacturer also be in the healthcare business? Why should you lose your health insurance if you get laid off? Why should your choice of doctor be limited by your employer?s choice of insurance carrier? (And why should it change whenever your employer decides to change carriers?) Why should your boss be allowed to dock your paycheck if you don?t get the medical ?counseling? he deems necessary? (Yes, this is real. And it?s rapidly making its way to a corporation near you.)

It. Makes. No. Sense.

There is a key point here that is never brought out by the corporate media, opinionists on the left or, certainly, by Republicans: If the health-insurance corporations have caused the crisis in their industry and, if they wanted to , they could fix it tomorrow. All they would have to do is cover everyone. That is what real capitalists would do. They would see the 50 million uninsured people in this country, not as a massive pool of bad risk, but as a potential market, ripe for the picking.

As the chart above shows, for years now, health-insurance corporations have been sloughing off their risk by systematically denying coverage to certain groups, either by their own corporate regulation ? i.e, the uniquely American status of having a preexisting condition ? or by charging so much for premiums that part-time workers, minimum-wage earners, the self-employed and others are priced out of the market.

In creating this pool of 30 to 50 million uninsured Americans, the insurance corporations have essentially socialized the risk in their industry. When the uninsured require health care, they generally receive it in emergency rooms, which are the most expensive health-care venues of all. Since most of them cannot afford $700 a month and more for insurance premiums, it follows that they also can?t afford the thousands of dollars in charges that are routinely racked up during emergency treatment.

When the uninsured default on their hospital bills, those costs are paid by local taxpayers. And that, too, is socialism.

The Affordable Care Act is not socialism, but it is a solution. On the other hand, what is the tea-party Republican solution to this crisis? Where is the alternative ?free enterprise? system to Obamaneycare they have promised for three years?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? British billionaire Richard Branson said Monday his venture to launch paying tourists into space has netted its 500th customer, and it's none other than Ashton Kutcher.

Branson made the announcement on his blog, saying he gave the actor a quick call to congratulate him.

"He is as thrilled as we are at the prospect of being among the first to cross the final frontier (and back!) with us and to experience the magic of space for himself," Branson wrote.

A representative for Kutcher did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Kutcher is among dozens of Hollywood types, international entrepreneurs, scientists, space buffs and others who have made deposits to be among the first to reach the edge of the Earth on Branson's Virgin Galactic space line.

Branson has said the aim is to one day make traveling to space safe and affordable for the masses, not just those who can afford the current $200,000 ticket price.

Virgin Galactic is in the final stages of its test flight program. The company will launch its spacecraft from Spaceport America, a specially designed terminal and runway built in a remote stretch of desert in southern New Mexico.

The company plans to begin commercial operations next year. Branson said he and his children plan to be on the first commercial flight.

Christine Anderson, executive director of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority, congratulated Virgin Galactic on Monday for selling its 500th ticket. She said she's looking forward to "the beginning of the commercial passenger space line industry."

Virgin Galactic customers will ride in a six-seat spacecraft that looks like a small plane, with wings near the rear that sweep upward. Once the craft and its mother ship reach a certain altitude, the smaller craft is released and its rockets are fired, pushing passengers back into their seats for the trip to suborbital space.

The spaceship features two large windows for each passenger, one on the side and one overhead, and small thrusters that allow the two pilots to maneuver the ship once in space.

Customers will get a 2 1/2-hour flight with about five minutes of weightlessness and views of Earth that until now only astronauts have been able to experience.

"I still sometimes have to pinch myself that it's for real," Branson said of the venture. "Ashton is joining a fast expanding group of true pioneers who are on their way to a life changing experience and a place in the history books."

A litany of food scares--and rules for organic produce--have pushed the industry to seek new solutions for food safety

Perfectly sanitized dimpled spinach leaves or tender greens like baby lettuce has been high on the wish list of the $3.1-billion bagged salad industry since its inception. The race to develop better wash systems for cleaning took off in earnest in 2006, after the high profile E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to bagged spinach killed five people and sickened more than 200, leaving the leafy green industry with a black eye and an ego-bruising $350-million price tag in recalls and lost sales.

Advances to date in cleaning salad greens have mostly centered on chlorine-based washes and plenty of testing throughout the supply chain. But for organic salad producers, such as Earthbound Farm, a wash additive may not be an option because it has not been approved for organic use. So the company teamed up with the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) at the Illinois Institute of Technology to look for solutions outside the bag. One of the most promising: high-power ultrasound.

When applied to leafy greens, high-powered ultrasound creates millions of tiny bubbles along a leaf's surface. As they burst at a rate of a thousand times a second, they provide high-energy shock waves that can get into the leaf's nooks and crannies to dislodge pathogens, which are then whisked away in the sanitized wash. (Earthbound is looking at citrus and peracetic acid?based sanitizers, both sanctioned for use with organic products.)

German-Afghan man accused of al-Qaida membership

BERLIN (AP) ? A German-Afghan man whose information helped prompt terrorism warnings across Europe in 2010 goes on trial Monday on charges that he was a member of al-Qaida and another terrorist group.

Ahmad Wali Siddiqui was captured by U.S. troops in Afghanistan in July 2010 and while in custody provided details on alleged al-Qaida plots supposedly targeting European cities. No attacks materialized.

Attorney Michael Rosenthal, who represents Siddiqui, said the indictment is based largely on statements made by his client to authorities and that Siddiqui plans to address the court as the trial opens in Koblenz state court. He would not give details.

The 37-year-old Siddiqui faces a possible 10 years in prison if convicted of membership in al-Qaida and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

Siddiqui trained with both terrorist groups in Pakistan and in the border region with Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, with the aim of taking part in violent jihad, or holy war, according to the indictment.

Authorities have said he was one of about a dozen radical Muslims who left the northern port city of Hamburg in 2009 to pursue terrorist training in the border region. Several of them have been captured or killed.

Another member of the group, German-Syrian dual national Rami Makanesi, was convicted last year in a Frankfurt state court of membership in al-Qaida and sentenced to four years and nine months. He was arrested in Pakistan in June 2010 and then extradited to Germany.

Prosecutors maintain Siddiqui received general military training at a camp run by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and helped produce a German-language propaganda film.

In the summer of 2009, he decided to leave the group's camp, and moved to an al-Qaida training area where he learned how to use heavy weapons, including anti-tank weapons and mortars, prosecutors said.

In June 2010, a "high-ranking al-Qaida member" instructed Siddiqui to return to Germany to become part of a European network of the terrorist organization, prosecutors said in a statement when Siddiqui was charged.

"The network was supposed to secure financial support for the organization, but at the same time be ready for other, not yet concrete, orders from the al-Qaida leadership," the statement said.

German magazine Der Spiegel, which obtained the full 114-page indictment, identified the al-Qaida leader behind the orders as Younis al-Mauritani, who was apprehended in 2011 by Pakistani agents working with the CIA.

After receiving his orders, prosecutors said Siddiqui slipped across the border into Afghanistan to return from there to Germany, but was captured by American troops in Kabul before he could leave the country.

Intelligence officials have said that, while in American custody, he provided interrogators with details of an early stage terrorist plot in Europe around Christmas 2010, which led the U.S. and others to issue a travel alert for Europe.

He was turned over to German authorities last April and is being tried in Koblenz, because it is near where he was brought back in to Germany at the U.S. Air Force's Ramstein Air Base.

Before going to Pakistan, Siddiqui and several other suspects met at Hamburg's al-Quds mosque, the prayer house that had served as a gathering point for some of the Sept. 11 attackers before they moved to the U.S. to attend flight schools in 2000, German intelligence officials have said. The mosque has now been shut down by authorities.

Intelligence officials also said Siddiqui was a friend of Mounir el Motassadeq, who was convicted by a German court in 2006 of being an accessory to the murder of the 246 passengers and crew on the four jetliners used in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. El Motassadeq also frequented the al-Quds mosque.
