Using Facebook app may be cheaper than texting

Facebook has sweet-talked 18 cellphone operators in 14 countries to get discounted or free data for Facebookers who text and chat on Facebook's Messenger app.

When the details are ironed out and the deal kicks in, messaging via Facebook?s messenger service may turn out to be cheaper than texting in some countries. The feature will work on the Messenger app for Android or iPhone and the Every Phone service for basic phones.

While Facebook doesn't mention this in its announcement of the deal, The Atlantic brings up the possibility that the feature may make calling cheaper too.

That's an intriguing possibility. Facebook does have a calling service tucked within the Messenger app. But for now, this feature is limited to the Messenger app on iPhones. And, it's only available in the US and Canada--two countries that are absent from the Facebook's list of new mobile operator partners.

If the calling feature did roll out to non-iPhone phones globally, it could make Facebook an attractive mobile tool. In places like India, for example, mobile users go to elaborate lengths to avoid paying call fees on their cell phone, spawning a convoluted but surprisingly functional "missed call ecosystem." It's reasonable to assume that any free mobile service that carried a free (or discounted) calling feature tucked in could become a popular one among mobile phone owners.

Of course, this would depend on what price the "discounted" data plans were fixed at, and if, if ever, Facebook took its voice calling global. If we got that far, would mobile operators be willing to let Facebook up their data-based calling feature and let it benefit from a discounted data scheme? A Facebook spokesperson told NBC News Digital that "the length of the free/discounted data [would be established] at the discretion of the mobile operator." As to the nitty-gritty of the deals, they have no other details to share, so we'll just to wait and see. In the meanwhile, here are the operators involved:

  • TMN in Portugal, Tre in Italy, Three in Ireland, Vivacom in Bulgaria, Backcell in Azerbaydzhan
  • Airtel and Reliance in India
  • Indosat, Smartfren, AXIS and XL Axiata in Indonesia, SMART in Philippines, DiGi in Malaysia, DTAC in Thailand
  • Etisalat in Egypt , Viva in Bahrain, STC in Saudi Arabia
  • Oi in Brazil

Video: Blood vessels 'sniff' gut microbes to regulate blood pressure

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Researchers at The Johns Hopkins University and Yale University have discovered that a specialized receptor, normally found in the nose, is also in blood vessels throughout the body, sensing small molecules created by microbes that line mammalian intestines, and responding to these molecules by increasing blood pressure. The finding suggests that gut bacteria are an integral part of the body's complex system for maintaining a stable blood pressure.

A description of the research, conducted in mice and test tubes, appeared online Feb. 11 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The contribution that gut microbes apparently make to blood pressure regulation and human health is a surprise," says Jennifer Pluznick, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "There is still much to learn about this mechanism, but we now know some of the players and how they interact," she adds.

Pluznick says that several years ago, thanks to a "happy coincidence," she found ? in the kidney ? some of the same odor-sensing proteins that give the nose its powers. Focusing on one of those proteins, olfactory receptor 78 (Olfr78), her team specifically located it in the major branches of the kidney's artery and in the smaller arterioles that lead into the kidney's filtering structures. Olfr78 also turned up in the walls of small blood vessels throughout the body, she says, particularly in the heart, diaphragm, skeletal muscle and skin.

To figure out which molecules bind and activate Olfr78, the scientists programmed cells to have Olfr78 protein receptors on their surface. They also gave these same cells the ability to start a light-producing chemical reaction whenever Olfr78 is activated. By adding different cocktails of molecules to the cells and measuring the light the cells produced, they homed in on a single mixture that activated Olfr78. They then tested each component in that mix and found that only acetic acid (a.k.a. vinegar) bound Olfr78 and caused the reaction.

Acetic acid and its alter ego, acetate, are part of a group of molecules known as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). When the team tested other molecules in this group, they found that propionate, which is similar to acetate, also binds Olfr78. In the body of mammals, including humans, SCFAs are made when zillions of bacteria lining the gut digest starch and cellulose from plant-based foods. The SCFAs are absorbed by the intestines into the blood stream, where they can interact with Olfr78.

To pinpoint the effect of Olfr78, the scientists gave SCFAs to mice missing the Olfr78 gene and found that the rodents' blood pressure decreased, suggesting that SCFAs normally induce Olfr78 to elevate blood pressure. However, when they gave SCFAs to normal mice with intact Olfr78, they did not see the expected increase in blood pressure, but rather a decrease, though it was less pronounced than before.

To test the effect of reducing the SCFAs available to Olfr78, the team gave mice a three-week course of antibiotics to wipe out the gut microbes responsible for SCFA production. In this case, normal mice showed very little change in blood pressure, but mice without Olfr78 experienced an increase in blood pressure, suggesting that there were other factors involved in the Olfr78/SCFA/blood pressure relationship.

The mystery was solved, Pluznick says, when the team examined mice lacking Gpr41, a non-smell-related protein receptor located in blood vessel walls that also binds SCFAs. When SCFAs bind to Gpr41, blood pressure is decreased. The researchers eventually discovered that Olfr78 and Gpr41 both are activated by SCFAs, but with contradictory effects. The negative effect of Gpr41 is counterbalanced by the positive effect of Olfr78, but Gpr41's effect is stronger, so an increase in SCFAs produces an overall decrease in blood pressure.

"We don't have the full story yet," says Pluznick. "There are many players involved in the maintenance of stable levels of blood pressure, and these are just a few of them. We don't know why it would be beneficial for blood pressure to decrease after eating or why gut microbes would play a part in signaling that change. But our work opens the door for exploring the effects of antibiotic treatments, probiotics and other dietary changes on blood pressure levels in mice, and perhaps eventually people."

Video: Will the sequester meeting be too late?

>>> the white house confirms president obama invited congressional leaders for a meeting on the sequester hours after the cuts are set to take effect. senate majority leader harry reid and mitch mcconnell at the meeting. it comes as the new " wall street journal " poll shows public patience wearing really thin as the fifth budget showdown in two years is about to come to a side. 51% said these clashes make them less confident. 16% said the negotiations make them more confident about the economy and after four months about the direction of the country, they have 59% say the country is on the wrong track. just 32% say it's headed in the right direction. the polls show the president's campaign against the sequester is working. 52% call sequestration a bad idea. just 21% say it's a good idea. the american public doesn't like the idea of doing nothing either. 53% say they would like congress to move forward with a plan the same amount or more cuts. joining me live is congressman adam smith . the democrat on the house armed services committee . thank you so much for joining me. there was a laundry list of number there is and the bottom line is people are sick and tired of being sick and tired of what we are watching in washington. there is a meeting be, but after the sequester.

>> i think they are right. we need to make a decision. we need a long-term plan to balance the budget. we don't have to balance the budget in ten years, but we have to get the deficit under control and talk about the choices involved. we have to raise taxes and make reductions in mandatory spending . this is the deal that has been hanging out for two years. it is tough and there no easy answers women got elected to lead and we need to make the decision because the impact on the economy right now, we need it without sequestration. the impact is devastating and sequestering makes it worse.

>> when you have 51% less confident at a time when there was a report this week home sales are up over 7%. people are feeling better and going out to look for jobs and here we are again with this man-made problem on facing this economy at this fragile time.

>> we're need to stop lurching from crisis to crisis. i thought it was bad from the beginning. it was only done because the republicans refused to raise the debt ceiling. the mandatory cuts that are damaging our economy when we can least afford it and shut off the sequester and move forward with funding the government appropriately and making the long-term decisions needed.

>> doesn't look like we will shut it out. friday you have this meeting after the deadline. what needs to be the first thing you believe the president should put on the table?

>> here's the two-steps. get the big deal on taxes and mandatory spending . if you can't get that, let's stop sequester and torturing the portion of the budget thinking that will force us to act on the bigger budget deal. obviously that is not working. let's get a deal on spending. i introduced a bill today that would get rid of sequester and lock in place further cuts in spending and over the course of the next ten years in a lot less, about a third of what's done. get the portion fixed and let's start passing appropriations bills. let's stop lurching from crisis to crisis. if you can't get the big deal , that's unfortunate, but don't torture the economy while we are waiting.

>> congressman, thank you so much for joining us. i appreciate it. we will see what happens as some movement is

Exclusive: Juniper mulls next move after asset sale talks falter - sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Juniper Networks Inc is reviewing its enterprise-focused networking business after talks fell through late last year to sell assets, including security unit NetScreen Technologies, several sources close to the matter told Reuters.

The world's No. 2 networking gear maker is mulling options that could include acquisitions to bolster the security and enterprise business, with a longer-term view of a sale or spin-off, two of the sources said. For acquisition financing it could decide to raise cash through a private sale of equity, the sources familiar with the company's thinking said.

From summer to fall of 2012, San Jose, California-based Juniper discreetly contacted about half a dozen competitors to test the appetite for its assets that handle networking for enterprise clients, two sources close to the matter said.

At the time, rumors were rife that major storage provider EMC Corp was also in talks to buy Juniper, though EMC CEO Joe Tucci has since dismissed any interest in buying a networking company.

Investment banks have not been hired by Juniper to assist in the review, the sources said. Goldman Sachs has helped the company on prior deals.

A spokesman for Goldman declined to comment.

Among the assets pitched last fall was NetScreen, a maker of firewall technology that Juniper bought in 2004 for $4 billion. But the interest was underwhelming, with parties walking away after concluding that Juniper's enterprise-oriented assets lacked innovation and growth, the sources said.

The company, which in October announced a 5 percent cut in its workforce, declined to comment on what a spokeswoman called rumors and speculation.

Asked at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday whether the company has plans to sell NetScreen or other parts of the business, Chief Executive Kevin Johnson said: "No, if you look at the acquisitions we have done, we're a buyer not a seller."

Gold Vs Paper Currency: Why The Precious Metal Is Your Best Bet ...

Precious metals have been a popular investment since the economy went haywire back in 2008. While the value of the dollar has consistently eroded, the value of precious metals such as gold and silver has been rising inexorably. For thousands of years people have recognized that precious metals hold their value like no country's currency can. Precious metals also provide a great hedge against economic uncertainty. As financial uncertainty spreads worldwide people have found investing in precious metal provides them with a measure of financial stability and even allows them to turn a profit.?

Gold and Silver Have Intrinsic Value

There are a number of good reasons to invest in precious metals. Precious metals are physical commodities. They have value in and of themselves. They can be used as collateral or to purchase goods and services almost anywhere in the world. Things like currency, stocks and bonds are only pieces of paper and virtual goods. They may represent something of value, but they have no real value themselves. If the companies or governments that issued them fail they become worthless. Precious metals, on the other hand, retain their value regardless of what happens in the political/economic landscapes. The value of gold and silver can simply never go to zero.?

A Limited Commodity

Another reason precious metals are better than cash is because they are a limited commodity. There is a finite amount of gold and silver on the planet. This is part of the reason they are so valuable. True, companies mine for them every day, still they represent only a tiny fraction of the resources on the planet. Reams of paper money are printed in countries all over the world each day. When governments (or counterfeiters) want more money they simply print it. But there have been numerous instances where it took baskets of money to buy a loaf of bread. That has never been the case with precious metals.

Durable And Versatile

Gold, silver and other precious metals are versatile. They can be transformed into jewelry, used in industry, made into coins or bars and still keep their value. They are also able to hold their value when deluged by water, burned by fire or broken into pieces. The same cannot be said of paper currency. For paper money to have any value it must be in pristine or near pristine condition. Damaged bills are usually not accepted as legal tender. Paper money can also easily be rendered useless by flood, fire or a mischievous child playing with scissors. This makes it a more risky proposition to have your wealth in paper currency than precious metals.

Enduring Value

For thousands of years precious metals have been used as a means to pay for goods and services. During that time many forms of paper currency have become worthless. Many forms of paper currency today are theoretically backed by precious metals. It makes more sense to own the precious metal than the paper currency. Banking today is handled electronically. With a few strokes or miss strokes on a computer the life savings of millions of people can be gone in an instant. If people are looking for a medium of exchange that has stood the test of time precious metals is their best bet.

How to Invest

If you are now convinced that gold is something you'd like to invest in, the 1st step is to find a reputable gold dealer that can help you through the whole process of investing in gold. Do your research and look at different?gold dealer reviews on the web. It is recommended to work with a dealer that is in your area and that has some positive testimonials from other clients like you. Also, look for accreditations to make sure that the gold or silver you're purchasing meet the minimum purity requirements.

Investing through your IRA

One of the most popular ways of buying gold in 2013 is investing through your IRA or 401k retirement accounts. Many Americans don't know that this is possible, yet it is one of the best ways of investing in gold. Check out a site like goldiraguide.org to learn more. One of the main advantages of buying gold through your IRA is the tax-saving aspect. In fact, certain plans allow you to buy gold bullion coin or bars tax-free, as long as your gold is being held by an accredited custodian.?

2 Dead People Got Free Phones, and 1 GOP Lawmaker Eyes an Opening

Sitting in a drawer somewhere in Rep. Tim Griffin?s office are two cell phones sent to dead people that were subsidized by the federal government. Now, the Arkansas Republican has drafted a bill to make sure that will never happen again.?

Coming off a session constantly referred to as the least productive in decades, most legislation is more about making a point than making a law.

Constituents sent these phones to Griffin, claiming they came in the mail for their deceased parents through Lifeline, a Federal Communications Commission?program meant to make sure low-income consumers aren?t cut off from the rest of the world. Lifeline has been much maligned over the years as being filled with exactly this type of waste and abuse (the term ?Obamaphone? may come to mind). Until recently, there were few ? if any ? real checks on whether recipients were deserving of subsidies from the program.

Last year, however, the FCC tightened the eligibility rules, and according to a new study by the Wall Street Journal, 41 percent of Lifeline's 6 million subscribers could not demonstrate their eligibility and will be dropped from the program. Not only would this presumably prevent any dead people from getting free phones, it will also save about $400 million in 2013 from the $2.2 billion spent in 2012. Politicians on both sides of the aisle welcome the new oversight on the program, but Griffin wants to go even further. He wants to completely end federal subsidies for cell phones.

?I don?t have any data on what people use them for, but anecdotally, I don?t think the predominant use is for emergencies,? he said. ?Also, I do not believe, from what I?ve seen ??and again, we don?t have data ??that the vast majority of people getting these phones cannot afford a minimal monthly fee for a phone.?

For Griffin, whether or not his anecdotal evidence matches up with reality doesn?t really matter all that much. It also doesn?t really matter that there are plenty of other compelling reasons beyond emergencies for why people might need a cell phone. Really, this bill is just a good place for him to make a central point about the role of government. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that?s mostly what Congress has been about these past couple of years.

?Is it really the role of the federal government to be proving people with free cell phones in the first place?? Griffin said. ?Where does it end? Free iPads for everyone? Free home computers? Free Internet? Free cars??

But if members of Congress are going to bother drafting a bill, whether to promote a message or not, it?s worth taking a peek at what the outcome would be. Griffin says his bill, which was just resubmitted to Congress, wouldn?t end the Lifeline program all together. It would just bring it back closer to what it was when it first started in 1984. He reasons that if citizens really need a phone for emergencies, a landline should suffice. It?s an idea that is at odds with the reality of the times.

According to the FCC, about 75 percent of all participants in the program (about 13 million people out of more than 17 million) chose wireless service over a landline.??It really shouldn't come as a surprise, as use of wireless services have been steadily rising for years. According to a 2012?study from the National Center for Health Statistics, more than a third of all U.S. households only had wireless telephones, a number that has been steadily rising for years.

Or, as Rep. Doris Matsui, a Democrat from California put it in a statement: ?Proposals to remove the cellular phone option would move us backward rather than forward.?

The Lifeline program itself doesn?t actually even offer free phones. What it does is pay a $9.25 subsidy toward the cost of service, whether it?s for landline or ??since 2005 ??wireless service. If a phone company wants to offer free phones to subscribers, that is their call to make. Money for the program also does not technically come from taxpayer monies. It comes from the Universal Service Fund that charges a fee to telecommunications service providers, who may or may not pass the cost on to subscribers.

The program is only available to people living at or below 135 percent of the federal poverty line or who take part in one of a number of federal assistance programs for the poor, like food stamps and Medicaid. Opponents of Griffin's bill say that by taking away federal assistance for a necessity like phone could create a small but noticeable burden on a vast section of the nation?s poorest.

But regardless of all this, Griffin still sees the program as a boondoggle for people to get free phones and for phone companies to get more customers. To him, the issue is about more than the $2.2 billion that the government spent on the program last year; it?s about the government giving handouts to people who don?t deserve them.

Like dead people.

'New Girl' star not worried about being typecast

NEW YORK (AP) ? Max Greenfield, who's been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Schmidt on the Fox comedy "New Girl," says he isn't worried about being typecast.

The idea makes him laugh.

"I don't think anybody was ever gonna put me in like 'Winter's Bone' anyway," the 32-year-old actor said in a recent interview. "You know what I mean? I don't think like if they were making a very dramatic, serious movie, they were gonna think, 'You know, I really like Max Greenfield, but Schmidt is just ... it's too much of a THING to put him in that movie.'"

He even took the bit further.

"I don't think they're trying to put me in 'Saving Private Ryan. 'We're looking for Ryan. (Pauses.) Is that Schmidt?'" he said. "I'm fine. I'm getting to do everything I want to do on this show."

"New Girl" stars Zooey Deschanel as a young woman with three male roommates, played by Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris.

Schmidt is a vain, oversexed ladies man with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He makes frequent references to his Jewish heritage. The character could be unlikable, but Greenfield's portrayal of Schmidt makes many viewers root for him.

Fans tweet Greenfield's lines as Schmidt while the show airs. And Greenfield garners respect from his peers.

"I wanna live in a world where the only person I see or interact with is Schmidt," actress Mindy Kaling tweeted last year. Gwyneth Paltrow wrote in her newsletter, GOOP, that she "fell in TV love" with the character. Greenfield now occasionally contributes to GOOP.

Greenfield worried before "New Girl" debuted in 2011 that viewers would dislike Schmidt.

"I thought, 'There's a good chance that I'll never work again after this.' I mean, we've played him in such a way that this could go terribly wrong, and then we started to air and the response was so positive. It kind of affirmed all the things that the writers were doing, all the things that I was doing. I think it said to everyone, 'We're on the same page. We can keep moving forward.' And then they just went crazy with it."

Schmidt's first name hasn't been revealed, and Greenfield hopes it never will be, unless it's done in a clever way, like if the character gets married.

"I'm just thinking of this now, but what a smart move this would be. 'Will you (first name) Schmidt take ... ' and that's the moment she goes, 'That's your first name?' That would be a nice moment. Under a chuppah."

Nevada roused into online gambling action by New Jersey ...

Nevada appears to be in no mood to let New Jersey get a leg up in the offering of online gambling, judging from the swift reaction last week by state legislators and Governor Sandoval.

Sandoval?s request to the legislature 30 days ago was passage of a bill that would allow for interstate online gaming was met with a done deal in just 18 days. Nevada?s online poker base, for instance, would not be that large due to population and residents? accessibility to real casino poker rooms. So the state will be looking to link up with other states to pair its regulatory expertise with other state?s customer bases.

New Jersey legislators, meanwhile, will meet tomorrow in Trenton to approve an amended version of their own online gaming bill ? just 19 days after Governor Christie?s unconditional veto:

Christie has said he might sign the amended bill as soon as tomorrow, though I wouldn?t be surprised if it takes a day or so to be vetted.

Mitch Fox, host of Nevada Week in Review, tweeted this picture and noted a colleague?s quip to the Governor at the bill signing ceremony was ?Are you going to give a pen to Gov. Christie??

In case there was any doubt of Nevada?s intent, Assembly Majority Leader and bill sponsor William Horne, D-Las Vegas, removed it at the bill signing ceremony.

?As to our competitor New Jersey, they should be accustomed to following Nevada,? Horne said, referring to New Jersey?s status as the second state in the U.S. to legalize brick-and-mortar casino gambling in the 1970s.

Delaware is in this race, too, with hopes of having its infrastructure in place by Sept. 30. It will be interesting to see who ?wins? the race.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z preview: a thin and light 10-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet

Sony Xperia Tablet Z handson

Notice the family resemblance? For Sony's latest Android tablet take, its Xperia Tablet Z, the company's extending the austere, omnibalance design (focus on all around symmetry and reflective surfaces) and waterproof certification of the Xperia Z to a 10.1-inch footprint and higher 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. Which means the unique, highly polarizing magazine-like fold of its predecessor, the Xperia Tablet S, has fallen by the wayside and, according to Sony, it's not likely to ever make a comeback. But a cosmetic evolution isn't all that's propping up the Xperia Tablet Z; its lightly-skinned Jelly Bean OS, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU and 2GB of RAM ensure above average performance for this Sony tab. So how does this Z of another frame fare? Follow on, as we take it for a brief test run.

Egyptian opposition politician demands election boycott

CAIRO (Reuters) - An opposition leader called on Saturday for Egyptians to boycott elections due to start in April, saying the process under Islamist President Mohamed Mursi would be "an act of deception".

Islamists, who have won every election since the 2011 overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, dismissed any suggestion that the parliamentary polls would lack credibility and predicted a strong turnout.

While divisions between the Islamists and opposition remain deep, Mursi appeared ready to soothe anger among the Christian minority over the election schedule. The speaker of Egypt's upper house said Mursi would change the dates to avoid Coptic Christians having to vote during their Easter celebrations.

Mursi called the lower house elections on Thursday, aiming to conclude Egypt's turbulent transition to democracy.

However, liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei drew comparisons with the last parliamentary polls to be held under Mubarak in 2010, a vote which was widely seen as rigged.

ElBaradei, a former U.N. nuclear agency chief, noted he had called for a boycott in 2010 "to expose sham democracy".

"Today I repeat my call, (I) will not be part of an act of deception," he said on his Twitter account.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which backs Mursi, rejected any call to boycott the voting which has been scheduled in four stages from April 27 to June. Essam Erian, a senior member of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, said the polls would be carried out under "complete judicial supervision" as well as being followed by Egyptian, regional and international media.

Voting would be monitored by Egyptian and foreign civil society and human rights organizations, he said on his Facebook page, adding that he expected wide participation.

COPTIC ANGER

Egyptian elections have been supervised by judges since the revolution. The relatively small numbers of judges have required the drawn-out process, allowing them to oversee voting in different regions on different days.

The opposition says Mursi should not have called the elections until a number of disputes had been settled, chiefly a new constitution produced by an Islamist-dominated assembly which contributed to serious street violence last year.

Mursi's announcement of the dates drew fire from Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the population, as the schedule would interfere with their Easter festival.

Ahmed Fahmy, the speaker of the Shura Council, said Mursi would respond to these worries. "The president answered the requests of the Coptic members and will issue a statement changing the dates of the elections," he told lawmakers.

The state news agency MENA quoted a presidential aide as saying a statement on new dates would be issued "within hours".

Islamists have used well-organized campaign operations to win every election since the revolution, while the liberal and leftist opposition has been beset by divisions. Previous opposition boycott threats have failed to materialize.

The National Salvation Front (NSF), which groups a number of parties opposed to the Islamists including ElBaradei's, is due to decide in the coming week whether to join a boycott.

"This is Dr. ElBaradei's own position and own opinion," said NSF spokesman Khaled Dawood, but he added that other NSF leaders were sympathetic to the idea of a boycott.

"This is yet another individual move by the Muslim Brotherhood and President Mursi, establishing facts on the ground and then asking you to basically go with the rules of the game they've set on their own," he said.

Nobu honored at South Beach Wine and Food Festival

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? His name is drawn on the napkins and chop sticks at his more than 30 restaurants around the world, but chef and restaurateur Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa prefers to stay out of the limelight.

"Normally I am the chef. Today is a tie and suit and I feel bad," he told The Associated Press, referring to his preference of being in the kitchen than in front of a large audience for a tribute dinner.

Nobu, as he prefers to be called, was honored Saturday at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival for his fusion cuisine that blends Japanese and South American ingredients.

"I've been cooking all my life. Life was not easy, but finally I'm here."

Life has been busy ? and quite successful ? for the Japanese-born chef who started cooking at the age of 18. He opened his first restaurant Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills in 1987 and today has 31 restaurants in more than two dozen cities around the world, from the Bahamas to Beijing. Nobu Tribeca was named "The Best New Restaurant" by The James Beard Foundation in 1995.

His latest venture extends into the hotel industry with the recently opened Nobu Hotel Restaurant and Lounge Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, said to be the largest Nobu restaurant to date. Nobu partnered with actor Robert DeNiro on the project, as he has done since 1994 with other restaurants.

"Before I met him, I had restaurants with other partners but never success," Nobu said. "But with Bob, he respects me. He understands my work. We drink and talk with each other. We also fight, but this communication makes for a nice partnership."

One of his fondest memories includes cooking for Princess Diana before her death in 1997. The soft-spoken chef remembers walking up to her table to introduce himself, but she already knew who he was from magazine articles and restaurant reviews.

"I was so proud of that," he said of that moment. Even today, Nobu takes pride in seeing his customers smile at his restaurants. Or the 85-year-old man who visited his Las Vegas spot and sent Nobu a thank you card. He says that is what makes him want to keep cooking.

"Cooking is my life. And still I am thinking of new dishes."

Nobu plans to slow things down ? eventually ? so he can travel more to see different foods and spend more time with his family.

Until then, Nobu wanted to share a special message to his friends and family: "Thank you is a short word. But I would like to thank you from my heart."

Iran conducts tests to bring down hypothetical drones

By Stephen Powell, Reuters

LONDON ? Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they had conducted tests aimed at bringing down a "hypothetical" foreign surveillance drone during a military exercise, the official Fars news agency said on Saturday.

The Islamic Republic News Agency, another official news agency, also reported the exercise, but omitted the word hypothetical giving the impression that a real drone had been downed.

Other official Iranian media outlets later referred to the downing of a "hypothetical" aircraft.

In the past, there have been incidents of Iran claiming to have seized U.S. drones.

In early January Iranian media said Iran had captured two miniature U.S.-made surveillance drones over the past 17 months.

Several drone incidents over the past year or so have highlighted tension in the Gulf as Iran and the United States flex their military capabilities in a standoff over Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran said in January that lightweight RQ11 Raven drones were brought down by Iranian air defense units in separate incidents in August 2011 and November 2012.

Girl fights to play in Catholic football league

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (AP) ? The Roman Catholic church in Philadelphia doesn't need another public relations headache after years of priest-abuse and school-closure headlines, but it's got one in the form of a pony-tailed, 11-year-old athlete.

Sixth-grader Caroline Pla is fighting the archdiocese for the right to keep playing church-sponsored youth football.

The soft-spoken twin has been battling boys on the gridiron since she was 5. She's played the last two seasons in a Catholic Youth Organization league, where the 5-foot-3, 110-pound offensive tackle and defensive end made the all-star team.

But the archdiocese may put the kibosh on her Catholic youth league career. While at least a few U.S. dioceses let girls play football, and about 1,600 girls play on U.S. high school teams, the Philadelphia league is open only to boys.

"First they said it was a boys sport. Then they said it was a safety issue. Then they said it was inappropriate touching. I think they are just constantly looking for excuses to not change it," Caroline said Thursday at her home in Buckingham Township, Bucks County.

She first played in a public Pop Warner league, then moved along with her teammates to the Catholic Youth Organization league in fifth grade. After one season without a hitch, she learned last fall that an overlooked boys-only rule would be enforced. The archdiocese, though, agreed to let her finish the season.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput is now reviewing the ban, with a decision expected next month after a panel of coaches, parents and doctors weigh in.

"Traditionally football is a boys-only sport due to its full contact nature," the church said in a statement. "Most parents and players have preferred this; some now disagree."

Caroline sent Chaput an email in January, explaining that her Catholic youth league team had been the best chapter in her burgeoning, three-season sports career.

By then, she and her parents, George and Marycecelia Pla, had taken to the airwaves to lobby for a rule change. An online petition has attracted more than 100,000 signatures, and Caroline recently appeared on Ellen DeGeneris' show as well as newscasts.

"I'm perplexed that you would contact me last, after publicizing your situation in both the national and regional media," Chaput wrote in a January email shared by the family. "That kind of approach has no effect on my decision-making. CYO rules exist for good reason."

The Women's Sports Foundation believes there are instead good reasons to reverse the rule ? and not just for the sake of girls.

"What the diocese is missing is all the wonderful things that come out of co-ed sports. The mutual respect that lasts a lifetime between girls and boys," said lawyer Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist in swimming who now is senior director of advocacy for the Women's Sports Foundation.

From a safety perspective, pre-pubescent girls and boys are often the same size. And legally, private or religious groups that receive any type of federal funding ? through low-income lunch programs or other aid ? must abide by Title IX, the 1972 law that guarantees girls equal access to sports, she said. There are exceptions for contact sports, but they cannot be invoked once girls have been allowed to play in a program, she said.

Hogshead-Makar advises colleges to make sports activities co-ed whenever possible ? in the weight room, on the team bus, on the court. She believes the mutual contact fosters respect and reduces rates of violence against women.

No matter how Chaput rules, Caroline could still play football next season for Pop Warner or her school team. And she has no plans to play in high school, because she doesn't think she'll be big enough to play her position at that level.

Her brother plays on the high school freshman team, while her twin sister and an older sister have been cheerleaders.

"Right now, I'm one of the biggest, because I've hit my growth spurt and a lot of them haven't," said Caroline, who scored her first touchdown this past season on a 15-yard run. "It's just really fun."

Tim Tebow To Speak At Anti-Semitic Anti-Gay Pastor?s Dallas Church

By dave-dr-gonzo | SOURCE

tebow_witnesses_for_jesus

This can?t be good for the popular self-identified Christian quarterback?s image:

[T]he Jets? quarterback has forced his way back into the spotlight with an April 28 speaking appearance at a Dallas megachurch known for its anti-gay, anti-Semitic pastor, Robert Jeffress.

Like Tebow, Jeffress knows how to grab the media spotlight; however, the Dallas pastor prefers public condemnations of other religions rather than relatively mundane quarterback controversies to worm his way into earned media appearances.

In 2011, Jeffress said Mormonism and Islam originated in ?the pit of Hell? and also added that Jews were also ticketed for eternal damnation. A friend of Texas governor and former Presidential candidate Rick Perry, he called Mormonism a cult and told an audience that it should disqualify 2012 GOP candidate Mitt Romney from being President.

ARC to Phase Out Emergency Communication Response Vehicles ...

By K4REE, on 21 February 2013

The American Red Cross has made the decision to phase out and decommission its Emergency Communication Response Vehicles (ECRVs), due to changes in technology, as well as a new satellite system and other factors regarding the vehicle fleet. ?Retrofitting the decade-old vehicles with new equipment is not a good use of donated funds, as the long-term strategy is to move to more portable systems,? American Red Cross Disaster Services Technology Manager Keith Robertory, KG4UIR, told the ARRL. ?This is consistent with the trends in the telecom and technology industries.?

The American Red Cross will be removing the Amateur Radios from the ECRVs as part of the decommissioning process. These radios will either become part of the deployable inventory or provided to the local American Red Cross chapter to build local capacity. [Click here to read the full article at ARRL]

Debt Consolidation and Divorce - Understanding the facts | Debt ...

Navigating a divorce can prove to be quite challenging especially when severing complex financial ties. If you are in the process of a divorce and are wondering how to separate your finances, it is helpful to have an idea about what to expect. Whether you need to consolidate debt after a divorce or you are wondering about consolidating prior, understanding the facts involved can aid you in making an informed decision for your financial future.

Handling Joint Accounts

If you have accounts that are in both you and your divorcee?s name, it is best to take care of the account prior to the divorce. As long as your name is on the loan, you will be legally obligated to repay the debt. Some of the loans commonly shared in a marriage include joint credit card accounts, car titles, mortgages, and other personal property such as boats and RVs. Handling each debt separately prior to finalizing the divorce is the most optimal and simplistic method for handling finances during a divorce proceeding.

Liquefying a Mortgage

A mortgage in both names is considered as joint debt with both parties liable for the debt. Since this debt is secured, it can not be consolidated into a traditional debt consolidation loan. One solution many divorcees select is selling the home and splitting the funds garnered from the sale of the home. As a benefit of taking this route, monies derived from the sale can be directed towards paying off joint credit card debt that is owned by both parties.

Handling a Joint Car Title

A car is often shared by both spouses and during a divorce, it can be difficult to decide who gets to keep the vehicle. In a contested divorce, the judge will likely determine who is allowed to keep the automobile. However in the case of an uncontested divorce both parties can amicably agree on a viable solution. One option most divorcing couples select is to have the individual who will be keeping the car refinance the loan in their name. This ensures that all subsequent debt associated with the vehicle will be in the name of the one who is using the car. Another option is to sell the car and split the funds evenly between both people.

Debt Consolidation

For debt consolidation to occur, both parties must already be divorced with each loan in one person?s name. After the divorce has been finalized each party can consolidate their remaining debt on their own as an effective debt management strategy. Since a debt consolidation involves acquiring a new loan to pay off unsecured debt, it is not feasible to perform a debt consolidation with both spouses prior to the divorce.

Understanding the options available when dissolving joint loans can help each individual in planning their finances for a positive outcome.

Jakarta Flood Losses Manageable for Non-Life Insurers: Fitch Ratings

Jakarta Flood Losses Manageable for Non-Life Insurers: Fitch Ratings
Muhamad Al Azhari | February 21, 2013

The insured losses from the recent flooding in Jakarta will not trigger excessive financial strain on the balance sheet of Indonesian non-life insurers, international rating agency Fitch Ratings said.

The rating agency cited data from Swiss Re Signa, a global wholesale provider of reinsurance, insurance and other insurance-based forms, that showed Indonesia has a low insurance penetration rate of less than 2 percent of its gross domestic product.

The industry will also get protection from reinsurance coverage.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported the floods in Jakarta, which affected a total of 41 square kilometers (around 8 percent of Jakarta?s total area) claimed 41 lives.

It struck a total of 74 urban wards in 31 subdistricts in five municipalities in the capital city, inundating more than 100,000 houses and some of its major roadways.

Indonesian government officials estimated economic losses from damaged property, production losses and other factors could reach Rp 32 trillion ($3.3 billion).

?Fitch?s initial assessment is that the insured losses will be markedly lower than the economic losses, although the extent of the impact will vary from one company to another,? the rating agency said.

?Insured losses are expected to top Rp 3 trillion based on industry estimates. It will take time for international catastrophe modeling firms and local loss adjusters to finalize the insured loss amount,? it said.

This insured losses estimate, is however, greater than the flood losses from the 2002 and 2007, Fitch said, as the areas affected are bigger and more concentrated toward inner Jakarta, whereby insurance coverage is higher than in rural areas.

The collapse of a 30-meter-long section of the city?s West Flood Canal dike on Jalan Latuharhary in Menteng made the 2013 floods particularly devastating. Areas such as the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle and adjoining Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Sudirman were completely inundated.

Fitch cited General Insurance Association, which quoted flood-related claims in 2002 and 2007 that amounted to Rp 1.5 trillion and Rp 2.1 trillion, respectively.

Fitch noted that the majority of the losses in the 2013 floods are likely to have come from the car and mortgage insurance lines.

?However, since flood risks are not automatically included in many of the motor and property insurance policies in Indonesia, a sizeable proportion of those affected might remain uncovered by insurance protection,? Fitch said.

On the other hand, Indonesian non-life insurers also benefit from their reinsurance protection.

?Based on industry estimates, more than 40 percent of the non-life [insurance] industry?s total gross premiums in 2011 were being ceded, with around 6 percent of these premiums to Indonesian reinsurers,? Fitch said.

?This suggests that a substantial proportion of the industry?s premiums are being ceded to foreign reinsurers. In Fitch?s view the low capital base of domestic reinsurers encourages reliance on overseas retrocessions,? the rating agency added.
