Florida Basketball: Why Gators Are Most Dangerous Team in NCAA

Expectations were high for the Florida Gators after being ousted by Louisville in the Elite Eight last season.

They?ve lived up to those expectations so far, and some would say Florida has even exceeded them. Ranked tenth in the AP and coaches preseason polls, the Gators currently rank fourth in both while sitting at 6-0 in SEC Conference play.

Having a home game tonight against SEC opponent South Carolina, here?s why the Gators are perhaps the most dangerous team in the country:

?

?

Defense, Defense, Defense

The Gators have risen to number four in the nation by playing great defense.

Their stingy defense, currently ranked third in the nation, has allowed opponents to score only 51.2 points per game while shooting only 36.1 percent from the field (good for ninth in the country).

Florida's rebounding numbers don?t tell the whole story as they rank 123rd in the nation, grabbing only 36.3 rebounds per game. The number that matters is their rebounding margin, currently +8.6 rebounds per game. They?re allowing opponents to corral 27.7 rebounds per game, including only 7.6 coming on the offensive end, not giving them many second chance shots.

Combine their defensive prowess with their rebounding and you have a team that doesn?t allow many first or second chance points.

?

?

Well Balanced Offense

How Far Will the Gators Go?

How Far Will the Gators Go?

  • Elite Eight

  • Final Four

  • National Champions

  • Other

Much the same as their rebounding, the overall numbers don?t tell the whole story for the Gators on offense.

Averaging only 73.7 points per game, 48th in the nation, their scoring margin sits at 22.6 points per game, placing them second in the nation. It is this kind of overall efficiency that makes them so dangerous.

Add in the fact that four players are averaging over 11 points per game, and you have a team that is going to be tough to stop.

The area where most defensive teams struggle is creating shots on offense. The Gators don?t have this problem.

Kenny Boynton is one of the quickest guard in the country that can penetrate and find open shooters on the outside. Mike Rosario, the Rutgers transfer (still bitter about this), has never been a shy shooter, but is shooting a career high 35 percent from three-point range this year.

The Gators most dynamic scorer is 6?10? senior Erik Murphy. Murphy is able to stretch defenses because of his three-point shooting ability (47 percent from three this season), providing a match-up nightmare for opponents.

?

?

Coaching and Experience

What sets the Gators apart is the mental make-up of the players on the court and their coach on the sidelines.

Billy Donovan remains one of the best coaches in the nation, building a perennial championship contender in Gainesville. He?s been to the NCAA Tournament 12 times, reached the championship game three times and has heard ?One Shining Moment? twice in his career. With Donovan on the sidelines, the Gators always remain dangerous.

Blend Donovan with the group of upperclassmen who returned from last year and this team becomes even more dangerous.

Only one freshman sees significant minutes (Michael Frazier II), while the rest of the minutes go to juniors and seniors. Florida's starting lineup features three seniors and two juniors, who have all experienced the Elite Eight twice in the past two years (even Rosario who did not play two years ago because of transferring, but was still with the team).

The deadly combination of stingy defense, efficient offense and experience both on the sidelines and on the court make the Florida Gators one of the most dangerous teams in the nation.

Deep freeze and family safety: Watch the carbon monoxide levels

What I learned from a little bird about CO home safety

By Lisa Suhay,?Guest Blogger / January 30, 2013

Carbon Monoxide can build up in a house, especially after the furnace has been turned on for winter. Make sure to have a CO detector, seen here, installed and tested regularly.

A little animal, the sharp drop in temperatures ? below freezing here in Norfolk last week ? and the recent flu epidemic formed a dangerous conspiracy of miscommunication in our household this week: the nearly missed signs of carbon monoxide ? CO -- poisoning in a house buttoned tight for the winter.

We have a battery operated CO detector. But being penny-wise and not buying batteries as often as we should, it wasn?t working while a toxic CO level built in our home after some wildlife chose our chimney (which vents the gas furnace and hot water heater) as a potential nest.

For two weeks my husband, three sons, and I suffered from the blahs and flu-like symptoms which we chalked-up to seasonal illness. When we felt better after being away from the house it was assumed that the illness had subsided or home remedies had worked.

Our son Ian, 17, came home early from high school exam day and said the house ?smelled like gas? ? like propane, he added. Virginia Natural Gas puts in an additive ?mercaptan? that makes the normally odorless gas smell like rotten eggs; which is different from the ?propane smell,? and we never use propane indoors. So I told him not to worry. When he insisted, I gave the ?Don?t sass your mother? warning.

It was fairly rare for Ian to come back to me a few minutes later looking mulish and actually demand I call the gas company ? so unusual and alarming that I relented and called.

I was told not to put my cordless phone handset back on the receiver or use the computer to prevent them from causing a spark. I was told to check on the flame in the furnace because, according to the emergency operator at VA Natural Gas, ?A gas flame should burn bright blue. A yellow or orange flame could indicate improper combustion or venting.?

Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) offers a checklist for detecting potential signs of carbon monoxide buildup and poisoning symptoms and we had them all. The buildup clues are: stuffy or stale air, very high humidity, fallen soot from the chimney or draft hood, and a hot draft coming from the draft hood. The poisoning symptoms were very similar to those being pounded into us by all the stories about the flu epidemic.

According to the VGN technician who assessed our home, the CO level should have been no higher than 9 parts-per-million by the handheld meter that he brought. Our home was at 240 PPM and climbing fast. ?At levels over 9 PPM, CO begins to adversely affect your health if you persist in breathing it for over eight hours," according to eHow?s David Scott.

Today everyone is fine. We opened all the windows, shut down appliances, got the people, cats, and dog outdoors and had a neighbor who has a heating business make an emergency visit. He found the chimney blocked, saying it was birds or squirrels trying to keep warm by filling the chimney with twigs and leaves in hopes of building a nest.

I talked to VGN spokesman Duane Bourne, who said our situation is not uncommon. ?These [carbon monoxide] leaks occur most often during the winter months, when an improperly vented furnace is turned on for the first time and when a furnace runs more frequently during colder temperatures like what you have been experiencing."

The debris filled a 5-gallon bucket, and then all was right with the world again. I bought a slightly more expensive detector that has both batteries as well as a plug for sockets. Sure, times are tough, but our family is priceless.

I wish a little bird had told me what to look for a month ago, instead of creating distress in our nest. I am putting up netting around the chimney cap and two new birdhouses down in the yard.

A diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB) can accurately and quickly detect both TB and drug-resistant strains, according to a new study. The authors of a new systematic review assessing the diagnostic accuracy of the Xpert MTB/RIF test published in The Cochrane Library say their study can provide timely advice for clinicians and policymakers in countries where TB is a major public health problem.

Millions of people develop TB every year. Around 13% of cases occur in people living with HIV and more than a quarter of these people die as a result. Drug resistance is a major public health problem that further complicates efforts to control TB. Multidrug-resistant TB is defined as resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid, which are two of the most effective and widely used anti-TB drugs. Xpert (Cepheid Inc, California) is a diagnostic test endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) that simultaneously detects TB and resistance to rifampicin, as an indicator of multidrug resistance. The test takes around two hours, with minimal hands-on technical time required.

Like sputum smear microscopy, which relies on detecting TB with a microscope in a laboratory, Xpert requires a sample of sputum. However, while thousands of bacteria must be present in each millilitre of sample for TB to be detected under the microscope, Xpert can detect TB bacteria at much lower concentrations. In addition, the conventional microscopy approach does not detect drug resistance. Instead, TB has to be grown in the lab. This presents problems, especially for multidrug-resistant TB, due both to the length of time required for the cultures to grow and the specialized laboratories and highly skilled staff needed.

The researchers, from the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group, McGill University and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), analysed data from 18 studies involving a total of 7,816 people, with most studies being carried out in low- and middle-income countries. The results show that when Xpert is used to screen 1,000 people, 150 of whom have TB, it picks up 132 of the 150 cases (88%) and falsely diagnoses 17 (2%) with TB. This is in a scenario where it is being used as a replacement for smear microscopy. In a scenario where Xpert is being used as a replacement for culture-based drug susceptibility testing, it is also able to detect the equivalent of 141 out of 150 cases (94%) of rifampicin resistance. When Xpert is used as a follow-on test, after conventional smear microscopy has already produced a negative result, it picks up 101 out of 150 cases (67%). By definition, smear-negative TB is not picked up by smear microscopy because microscopy cannot detect small numbers of bacteria. Xpert picked up 67% of this group that would have been missed by microscopy.

"This study represents the most comprehensive review on the diagnostic accuracy of Xpert to date and may help countries make decisions about scaling up its use for management of TB and drug-resistant TB," said lead researcher, Karen Steingart, of the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group.

Karin Weyer, Coordinator, Laboratories, Diagnostics and Drug Resistance at the World Health Organization (WHO) said, "This Cochrane Review provides high quality evidence that reinforces WHO's endorsement of this test. Recent price reductions have greatly facilitated roll-out of this technology, including a new three-year initiative called the TB Xpert Project, funded by UNITAID and executed by WHO and the Stop TB Partnership. 1.4 million test cartridges and over 200 GeneXpert instruments for the rapid detection of TB and rifampicin resistance will be distributed in 21 countries with a high burden of TB."

Lucica Ditiu, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership, said, "We welcome the Cochrane Review of Xpert, an innovation that represents a major milestone in our quest to achieve the goal of zero deaths from TB which is curable but still takes the life of three people every minute. The Stop TB Partnership is making every effort to help countries understand how best to use this new technology. Our TB REACH initiative is deploying Xpert to numerous countries through projects that seek to increase the number of TB cases detected and treated, and these projects will deliver data that can provide an evidence base for determining how Xpert should be used for the greatest impact."

Bonobos predisposed to show sensitivity to others

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Comforting a friend or relative in distress may be a more hard-wired behavior than previously thought, according to a new study of bonobos, which are great apes known for their empathy and close relation to humans and chimpanzees. This finding provides key evolutionary insight into how critical social skills may develop in humans.

The results are published in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Researchers from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University, observed juvenile bonobos at the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo engaging in consolation behavior more than their adult counterparts. Juvenile bonobos (ages 3 to 7) are equivalent to preschool or elementary school-aged children.

Zanna Clay, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Emory's Department of Psychology, and Frans de Waal, PhD, director of the Living Links Center at Yerkes and C.H. Candler Professor of Psychology at Emory, led the study.

"Our findings suggest that for bonobos, sensitivity to the emotions of others emerges early and does not require advanced thought processes that develop only in adults," Clay says.

Starting at around age two, human children usually display consolation behavior, a sign of sensitivity to the emotions of others and the ability to take the perspective of another. Consolation has been observed in humans, bonobos, chimpanzees and other animals, including dogs, elephants and some types of birds, but has not been seen in monkeys.

At the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary, most bonobos come as juvenile or infant orphans because their parents are killed for meat or captured as pets. A minority of bonobos in the sanctuary is second generation and raised by their biological mothers. The researchers found bonobos raised by their own mothers were more likely to comfort others compared to orphaned bonobos. This may indicate early life stress interferes with development of consolation behavior, while a stable parental relationship encourages it, Clay says.

Clay observed more than 350 conflicts between bonobos at the sanctuary during several months. Some conflicts involved violence, such as hitting, pushing or grabbing, while others only involved threats or chasing. Consolation occurred when a third bonobo -- usually one that was close to the scene of conflict -- comforted one of the parties in the conflict.

Consolation behavior includes hugs, grooming and sometimes sexual behavior. Consolation appears to lower stress in the recipient, based on a reduction in the recipient's rates of self-scratching and self-grooming, the authors write.

"We found strong effects of friendship and kinship, with bonobos being more likely to comfort those they are emotionally close to," Clay says. "This is consistent with the idea that empathy and emotional sensitivity contribute to consolation behavior."

In future research, Clay plans to take a closer look at the emergence of consolation behavior in bonobos at early ages. A process that may facilitate development of consolation behavior is when older bonobos use younger ones as teddy bears; their passive participation may get the younger bonobos used to the idea, she says.

The Danger of Silencing Your Enthusiastic Crowd | Social Media ...

?

Social Media word of mouth customersI read with interest a recent article in the New York Times about?restaurants that forbid patrons from taking photos of their food. Taking pictures of food has become a part of our collective cultural language. From Facebook to Instagram, we love to document our meals and show others what we are eating or drinking at any given moment. While some users hate this, I admit that I?m a food-shooter. And I like looking at pictures of food that my friends have posted. It?s certainly much better than being bombarded with pictures of duck-faced teens looking in bathroom mirrors.

But the article made me think more about how we treat the crowd: our customers and potential customers. The ubiquity of the Internet and social media has not only changed the way we live our lives, but the way we do business. Gone are the days of completely controlling your own brand. You must be willing to cede some portion of that to the crowd.

Now back to these restaurants that won?t allow their patrons to take pictures of their food. I understand the frustration. My cell phone picture of something the chef loving prepared and slaved over won?t do it justice. It will pale in comparison to something taken by a professional photographer with proper lighting. In fact, my picture posted on Facebook or Instagram might even make it look downright unappetizing. I get that. But?

Yes, but.

Why am I taking a picture of the food? Because I?m a happy customer who wants to show the world what you have prepared for me. I want to tell the world that, yes, I am eating at YOUR restaurant, and the food looks and tastes amazing.

That?s called word of mouth, otherwise known as your best friend.

I also understand from the article that my taking a picture of my food might be an annoyance to the other customers. Perhaps, but doubtful. Most picture takers are going to be fairly discrete, and remember: picture taking of food has become the cultural norm. Boorish behavior in restaurants is related to the particular customer, not the fact that they are taking pictures. It has existed since the dawn of restaurants. Don?t throw the Instagram baby out with the bathwater.

In the end, it?s about control. Yes, it is your restaurant. Yes, you can dictate most of what goes on there. But should you?

As my friend Liz Jostes noted on Facebook:

Anyone who is that eager to share a photo of food with their network will be even more eager to let everyone in their network know that that restaurant said NO.?Brands dream about customers doing exactly what these restaurant patrons are doing: promoting their brand for them. The missed opportunities of having a bunch of brand ambassadors promoting your business themselves, coupled with the potential for very negative PR? I have a hard time getting my brain around that.

It?s akin to businesses that create Facebook pages and turn off the ability of users to comment or post on that wall. Or bloggers who won?t let readers comment. Businesses that think like that are operating out of a culture of fear.

One of the best examples of how the Internet and mobile technology have changed the way we do business is the music industry, specifically live concerts. There was a day when we were forbidden to take cameras or other recording devices into concert venues. Bands and musicians feared that bootlegged material might saturate the market and reduce their revenue. Plus there was a concern over the quality of the recordings. A band like the Grateful Dead, which actively encouraged recording and trading, was the exception.

But when everyone has a smart phone, which also allows for picture taking and recording, it?s kind of hard to police something like that. You can tell people not to bring cameras into the venue, but can you block them from bringing in a cell phone? So rather than fight it, musicians have decided to let their fans shoot and record. In fact, smart bands have embraced this technological change and actually encourage fans to take pictures and video, urging them to post them online. They understand that there is marketing value in this sort of behavior, and they want to tap into the power of their fans and word of mouth.

Image

Yes, it is important to maintain the integrity of our brands, but we need to pick and choose our fights. We need to think the through the potential outcomes of shushing the crowd. If we gag them, it doesn?t prevent them from talking about us. On the contrary, it causes them to talk about us, but not in the way we might hope. We need to figure out how they?ll react; how they?ll respond. And yes, there might be times when preventing certain types of behavior might be the smart thing to do, but I don?t think that?s the case in this specific situation.

If your customers are eager to talk about you, let them. In fact, encourage them! I?ve been thinking about this for a few days, working on ways that one of my restaurant clients can take advantage of the many photos taken by customers and posted online. We?re going to come up with a plan to encourage this behavior, and use it to our advantage.

So go ahead: let your customers take pictures of your product. Ask them to post them online. Find ways to encourage them to talk about you and share their thoughts and pictures. The benefits will usually far outweigh any negatives.

What are your thoughts on the idea of restaurants or other businesses prohibiting photography of food or other products?

dotMobi's top ten trends for 2013 - Mobile Entertainment

Marketing manager Martin Clancy offers his thoughts on what will happen in the mobile web world this year.

ME has recently partnered with mobile web specialist dotMobi for a mini-series, comprising interviews, opinion, and guidance. The company has highlighted how crucial mobile sites are for businesses, the importance of device detection, the issue of mobile web fragmentation and the ten questions businesses should answer before developing a mobile web strategy.

With 2013 underway, dotMobi's marketing manager Martin Clancy has identified some key trends for the year ahead from a mobile web perspective.

The proliferation of a vast array of different device types shows no signs of abating, with connected devices turning up in new contexts all the time ? for example we recently added a web enabled tablet from Toys R Us to our DeviceAtlas platform. One trend we?re noting at the moment is watch phones ? we?ll see if that one gains widespread traction or stays niche. That?s just on the device side of the equation - new operating environments like Mozilla?s mobile OS and Tizen may take further strides in 2013.

Transport of 1?s and 0?s over the internet is increasing. That?s not particularly specific to 2013, but the trend towards moving between multiple devices is most definitely on the increase. It means that marketers and brands need to tailor not only their content to be consumed across different screens but also to report and measure their campaigns on these channels.

TV as a primary source of media continues to be challenged by other device types as noted by Nielsen, the number of US households with TVs is in decline for the last 2 years.

Brands will have to be much more conscious of context, and that goes beyond a simple desktop/mobile dichotomy. Just because you are on a phone, doesn?t mean you are rushing about the place or on public transport ? the vast majority of tablet use is at home, but still it?s difficult to make contextual assumptions unless you know about the characteristics of the accessing device.

We think you?ll hear more about this in 2013, a kind of best of both worlds approach to content adaptation, where an initial identification of the device can determine when to send an adaptive experience. It won?t be right for everyone, but it offers a better way than pure responsive to delivering great experiences without serving massive code payloads to all devices.

We?ve seen a rapid growth in m-commerce ? we?ve seen over 33 per cent of goMobi sites include an m-commerce feature.? Google say 67 per cent of consumers said they?re more likely to make a purchase if a site is mobile-friendly. More proof that mobile web translates to real revenue.

Despite the promise of higher speeds with the roll out of LTE, only the foolhardy would dismiss bandwidth and network usage efficiency as something to aspire to for mobile content. Short version: speed still matters in the UX stakes. Check out this tool to see what page weight you are delivering to mobile devices.

Native apps still have their place but we think that the native app has already reached its high water mark, and there will be a continued shift of emphasis towards HTML5 apps delivered over the web. It just doesn?t make sense to maintain native apps across various platforms for many businesses.

It has exploded over the past couple of years. We think that trend is set to continue as more mobile specific real estate comes on stream.

Mobile phones will become the dominant web accessing device sometime by Q3 this year. Gartner said this, we think they are right and said so back in February 2012 - in any case the genie is well and truly out of the bottle by now.

(AP) ? With a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the San Francisco 49ers arrived at their first Super Bowl in 18 years on Sunday.

The players walked off the airplane in a businesslike manner ? no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his head phones as he calmly walked on the tarmac.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

The 49ers will play Baltimore next Sunday, seeking their sixth Super Bowl crown but first since the 1994 season. The Ravens arrive Monday.

Israel's comatose Sharon shows brain activity

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Seven years after a massive stroke removed him from office and left him in a vegetative state, former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is able to process information and has exhibited "robust activity" in his brain, according to doctors who conducted recent tests.

Though some hoped Sharon might regain consciousness and resume his life, experts warned that was highly unlikely.

The medical team that tested him last week said Monday that the scans showed the 84-year-old Sharon responding to pictures of his family and recordings of his son's voice. They cautioned, however, it is not clear how much he understood, stressing the chances of his regaining full capacities are almost zero.

"We were surprised to see such robust activity in his brain," said Dr. Alon Friedman, head of the Zlotowski Center for Neuroscience at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba. "The information is getting in and is getting processed. He hears what they are saying. To what extent he understands, we cannot say for sure ... but there are encouraging hints that he does."

Sharon was at the height of his political power in early 2006 when a devastating stroke incapacitated him. He has been in a deep coma ever since, connected to a respirator. His family has said he sometimes opens his eyes and moves his fingers, but little else has been disclosed about his condition. No one has suggested that his cognitive functions have returned.

Last week a team of Israeli and U.S. scientists performed a series of tests on him at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, using a newly developed functional MRI to assess his brain function. Friedman said the two-hour procedure was among the first of its type to be conducted on someone who had suffered such a brain hemorrhage. It is also rare to perform such tests on someone Sharon's age, he said.

Friedman would not disclose additional information about Sharon's medical state or say whether there had been any physical reactions to the stimuli. He said the findings would provide solace to Sharon's sons, Gilad and Omri, giving them confirmation that their father could hear them. Omri Sharon declined comment when contacted by The Associated Press Monday.

Raanan Gissin, a long-time Sharon confidante, said those close to the former leader were encouraged by the tests.

"The hope is not that he will return to be the leader that he was, but basically the hope ... that Sharon will return to normal life," he said. "The people of Israel really feel gratitude toward Sharon and they think he deserves to end his life like a normal person."

Experts doubted that would happen.

Dr. Ilan Shelef, head of medical imaging at Soroka University Medical Center, sought to temper expectations from the results of Thursday's scans.

"What is very important to understand is that we have a snapshot of what happened" during the test, said Shelef, who participated in the testing. "He received some stimuli from his family and he responded to these stimuli. It was a metabolic response in the brain," he said. "Metabolic" refers to physical reactions.

"We don't know what happened two years ago or four years ago and we have no idea what will happen in the future," he said. "We just know that on Thursday evening there was a metabolic response in the brain of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon."

Dr. Nicholas Schiff, professor of neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College, called the findings "interesting but ambiguous" and warned against reading too much into the tests.

Schiff, who did not participate in the testing and said he had not reviewed the research, said the FMRI is a widely used tool used for gathering data, but there is no consensus among researchers on interpreting the results. "In general, there are very few uses of FMRIs that unequivocally demonstrate awareness in patients that appear unresponsive," he said.

Sharon was a highly decorated military officer who fought in three wars before entering politics in the 1970s and serving in a series of top ministerial posts. He was elected prime minister in 2001 and led Israel for the next five years until he was incapacitated.

Shortly before his stroke, he directed a unilateral withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip, ending a 38-year military occupation of the territory, bolted his hard-line Likud Party and established the centrist Kadima Party. He appeared on his way to an easy re-election when he suffered the stroke. His deputy, Ehud Olmert, took over and was elected prime minister a few months later.

Sharon had a first, small stroke in December 2005 and was put on blood thinners before experiencing a severe brain hemorrhage on Jan. 4, 2006. After spending months in the Jerusalem hospital where he was initially treated, Sharon was transferred to the long-term care facility at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv.

After his second stroke, doctors performed several extensive emergency brain operations to stop cerebral hemorrhaging. After a long stay at the hospital, he was taken for a brief period to his home in southern Israel. He was rushed at least once into intensive care for dialysis after his kidneys began failing.

Russia's Medvedev says Assad's chances to keep power fading

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's chances of retaining power are getting "smaller and smaller" every day, according to the transcript of an interview with CNN released by Medvedev's office on Sunday.

Medvedev's remarks were the most vocal Russian statement that Assad's days could be numbered. But he reiterated calls for talks between the government and its foes and repeated Moscow's position that Assad must not be pushed out by external forces.

"I think that with every day, every week and every month the chances of his preservation are getting smaller and smaller," Medvedev was quoted as saying. "But I repeat again, this must be decided by the Syrian people. Not Russia, not the United States, not any other country."

"The task for the United States, the Europeans and regional powers ... is to sit the parties down for negotiations, and not just demand that Assad go and then be executed like (the late former Libyan leader Muammar) Gaddafi or be carried to court sessions on a stretcher like (Egypt's) Hosni Mubarak."

Russia has been Assad's most important ally throughout the 22-month-old Syrian conflict, which began with peaceful street protests and evolved into an armed uprising against his rule.

Moscow has blocked three U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at pushing him out or pressuring him to end the bloodshed, which has killed more than 60,000 people. But Russia has also distanced itself from Assad by saying it is not trying to prop him up and will not offer him asylum.

Mobile Device Speeds Up Diagnostic Testing for HIV and More ...

imageFast, Low-cost Device Uses the Cloud to Speed Up Diagnostic Testing for HIV and More

Mobile Device Can Easily Be Used in Remote Areas around the World

Samuel K. Sia, associate professor of biomedical engineering atColumbia Engineering, has taken his innovative?lab-on-a-chipand developed a way to not only check a patient?s HIV status anywhere in the world with just a finger prick, but also synchronize the results automatically and instantaneously with central health-care records?10 times faster, the researchers say, than the benchtop ELISA, a broadly used diagnostic technique. The device was field-tested in Rwanda by a collaborative team from the Sia lab and ICAP at Columbia?s Mailman School of Public Health.

In the?study?published online January 18, 2013, in?Clinical Chemistry, and in the print April 2013 issue, Sia describes a major advance towards providing people in remote areas of the world with laboratory-quality diagnostic services traditionally available only in centralized health care settings.

?We?ve built a handheld mobile device that can perform laboratory-quality HIV testing, and do it in just 15 minutes and on finger-pricked whole blood,? Sia says. ?And, unlike current HIV rapid tests, our device can pick up positive samples normally missed by lateral flow tests, and automatically synchronize the test results with patient health records across the globe using both the cell phone and satellite networks.?

Sia collaborated with Claros Diagnostics (a company he co-founded, now called OPKO Diagnostics) to develop a pioneering strategy for an integrated microfluidic-based diagnostic device?the mChip?that can perform complex laboratory assays, and do so with such simplicity that these tests can easily be carried out anywhere, including in resource-limited settings, at a very low cost. This new study builds upon his earlier scientific concepts and incorporates a number of new engineering elements that make the test automated to run with data communication over both cell phone and satellite networks.

?There are a set of core functions that such a mobile device has to deliver,? he says. ?These include fluid pumping, optical detection, and real-time synchronization of diagnostic results with patient records in the cloud. We?ve been able to engineer all these functions on a handheld mobile device and all powered by a battery.?

This new technology, which combines cell phone and satellite communication technologies with fluid miniaturization techniques for performing all essential ELISA functions, could lead to diagnosis and treatment for HIV-infected people who, because they cannot get to centralized health care centers, do not get tested or treated.

?This is an important step forward for us towards making a real impact on patients,? says Jessica Justman, MD, senior technical director at ICAP and associate clinical professor of medicine in epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. ?And with the real-time data upload, policymakers and epidemiologists can also monitor disease prevalence across geographical regions more quickly and effectively.?

A New Perspective On Treating Late-Stage Cancer ? CBS Philly

(credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

(credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - You may remember reading about Dr. James Watson. He is one of the scientists behind the Watson and Crick work that gave us a detailed look at DNA and its double-stranded helix ? clearly a major scientific breakthrough in the 20th century. Well, he just wrote a paper which he thinks is equally, if not more important, and you have to listen to James Watson. He takes a look at curing late stage cancers.

Watson argues?that the overproduction of antioxidants may be the reason why certain advanced cancers have been hard to treat.
What he says is counter to what has been touted in the past, antioxidant consumption may not lead to less cancer and may actually promote cancer progression in late stage cancers. Watson argues that finding ways to reduce antioxidant levels may help treat or even cure late-stage cancers.

Of course he needs to back this up with scientific evidence.

DNA bullets tag criminals for later arrest

17 hrs.

Cops have gained a new tool to use in their never-ending quest to catch criminals: Guns that fire uniquely?coded DNA pellets.

The bullets are fired from a rifle and pistol, and are effective at distances up to about 130 feet, says??Selectamark, the company that recently?unveiled the system.?The non-lethal bullets leave a tell-tale mark on whomever they hit so that suspects can be identified and arrested at a less confrontational time, according to?the company.

The SelectaDNA High Velocity System may be particularly useful in situations where security personnel are unable to safely apprehend suspects, such as during riots???assuming the cop has good aim.

The bullets evolved from the company?s DNA Spray, launched in 2008.?It?sprays?suspects,?and?the?spray?in?turn?triggers special alarms in businesses, such as jewelry stores and gas stations.?The DNA remains on offenders for weeks.

Hepatitis C linked to ink

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Researchers are hoping that people will do some research about where to get a tattoo, after a study found a link between body art and hepatitis C.

The new study found that people with the virus were almost four times more likely to report having a tattoo, even when other major risk factors were taken into account, co-author Dr. Fritz Francois of New York University Langone Medical Center told Reuters Health.

Although the study could not prove a direct cause and effect, "Tattooing in and of itself may pose a risk for this disease that can lay dormant for many, many years," Francois said.

About 3.2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C, and many don't know because they don't feel ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hepatitis C is the leading cause of liver cancer and most common reason for liver transplants in the U.S. Some 70 percent of people infected will develop chronic liver disease, and up to 5 percent will die from cirrhosis or liver cancer.

For the current study, researchers asked almost 2,000 people about their tattoos and hepatitis status, among other questions, at outpatient clinics at three New York area hospitals between 2004 and 2006.

Researchers found that 34 percent of people with hepatitis C had a tattoo, compared to 12 percent of people without the infection.

The most common routes of contracting hepatitis C, a blood-borne disease, are through a blood transfusion before 1992 or a history of injected drug use. Injected drug use accounts for 60 percent of new hepatitis cases every year, but 20 percent of cases have no history of injected drug use or other exposure, according to the CDC.

Francois and his colleagues only included people with hepatitis C who did not contract it from these two other common sources.

After accounting for other risk factors, the difference between people with and without hepatitis was even greater, with four times as many tattoos in the infected group than for uninfected people, according to results published in the journal Hepatology.

"This is not a big surprise to me," Dr. John Levey, clinical chief of gastroenterology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, told Reuters Health. Earlier studies had found a link, but they were small and had not taken other risk factors into account as well as this new one did.

"This was one of the stragglers, and now we finally have some numbers for it," said Levey, who was not involved in the study.

Still, the CDC's Dr. Scott Holmberg said the link may not be quite as strong as the findings suggest, because some people who had used illegal drugs probably would not admit it, even on an anonymous questionnaire. And the researchers didn't rule out people who contracted hepatitis before getting their tattoo.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TATTOO PARLOR

Holmberg, of the CDC's viral hepatitis division, recommends people only have tattoos or piercings done by trained professionals.

"In the U.S., there have been no reports of hepatitis C outbreaks linked to professional tattoo parlors," told Reuters Health by email.

In 2012, 1 in 5 people reported having at least 1 tattoo, according to a Harris poll.

"There are very reputable places that use appropriate standards," said Francois. Tattoo parlors are not federally regulated, and standards vary by state and region, so it's up to the consumer to do their homework, he said.

The Alliance for Professional Tattooists recommend finding a tattoo artist who wears disposable gloves, a clean work space without blood spatters and single-use disposable needle kits.

Levey said he wouldn't prevent his two adult daughters from getting tattoos, but he would make sure they were aware of the hepatitis C risk first.

"A lot of their friends have tattoos, it's the cool thing to do," he said. "They're adults, they can make their own decisions. But I'd mention this to them, because the long-term consequences of hepatitis C are so serious."
