Outspoken Harvard professor Jonathan Zittrain to head FCC's open internet advisory panel

The FCC has created a new forum for corporations, experts and activists to scrap over web laws: The Net Neutrality Advisory Committee. Members have been tasked with "tracking and evaluating the effects of the FCC's Open Internet rules," as well as making policy recommendations. The new group is to be led by Harvard professor and long-time defender of an open internet, Jonathan Zittrain, whose appointment echoes that of Tim Wu -- another expert in a senior advisory position over at the FTC. An Ocean County teen celebrated for his academic and athletic achievements has died following a battle with brain cancer, according to a death announcement.

Joshua Stanton Cramer, 14, of Jackson, died Tuesday after what an obituary posted to the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals calls a "courageous" fight against?Diffused Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare and aggressive form of brain stem cancer.

The teen, who was born in Lakewood, attended Ocean Day School there and won the Citizenship award 4 years in a row.?He transferred to Switlik Elementary School and won the Ocean County Guidance Councilors Caring Award, an honor given to one fifth grade student at each county middle school, according to the obituary. At?Goetz Middle School, he was once awarded student of the month.

Cramer played baseball and football and was awarded the Unsung Hero award by the New Jersey Football Officials Association, Jersey Shore Chapter, in 2011, the obituary reads.

He is survived by his parents, Walter H. Cramer and?Michele Kiely Cramer, an older brother, Jason Maxwell Cramer, as well as grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Afghanistan: Bomb kills NATO service member

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A homemade bomb killed a member of the U.S.-led NATO coalition in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, hours after the Taliban attacked a hilltop police post in the north, killing eight Afghan policemen, officials said.

The NATO death raised the number of coalition troops who have been killed in Afghanistan this year to 173. The coalition did not provide any further details about Wednesday's attack.

The policemen who were attacked by the Taliban on Tuesday evening in Badakhsan province's Warduj district waged a three-hour battle to retake their post, killing six militants in the process, said the provincial governor's spokesman, Abdul Maruf Rasikh. Two policemen and 11 militants were wounded, he said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to reporters by the group's spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.

Badakhshan province is relatively peaceful but has experienced periodic attacks. Two foreign doctors and their three Afghan colleagues were kidnapped last week in Badakhshan.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, three district government employees were killed by a roadside bomb as they were traveling to work Wednesday morning in eastern Nangarhar province's Deh Bala district, said district chief Asrarullah.

On Tuesday, the U.S.-led NATO force announced it had killed al-Qaida's second-highest leader in the country in an airstrike in eastern Kunar province.

Sakhr al-Taifi, also known as Mushtaq and Nasim, was responsible for commanding foreign insurgents in Afghanistan and directing attacks against NATO and Afghan forces, the alliance said. He frequently traveled between Afghanistan and Pakistan, carrying out commands from senior al-Qaida leadership and ferrying in weapons and fighters.

The airstrike that killed al-Taifi and another al-Qaida militant took place Sunday in Kunar's Watahpur district, the coalition said. A follow-on assessment of the area determined that no civilians were harmed, it said.

Al-Taifi is not a widely-known figure. His name does not appear on the U.N. blacklist of al-Qaida terrorists, which has several hundred names.

The coalition declined to reveal the name of al-Qaida's top leader in Afghanistan "due to ongoing operations and security concerns."

That's because the stock awards are being tied more often to company performance. In those instances, CEOs can't cash in the shares right away: They have to meet goals first, like boosting profit to a certain level.

The idea is to motivate CEOs to make sure a company does well and to tie their fortunes to the company's for the long term. For too long, activists say, CEOs have been richly rewarded no matter how a company has fared ? "pay for pulse," as some critics call it.

To be sure, the companies' motives are pragmatic. The corporate world is under a brighter, more uncomfortable spotlight than it was a few years ago, before the financial crisis struck in the fall of 2008.

Last year, a law gave shareholders the right to vote on whether they approve of the CEO's pay. The vote is nonbinding, but companies are keen to avoid an embarrassing "no."

"I think the boards were more easily shamed than we thought they were," says Stephen Davis, a shareholder expert at Yale University, referring to boards of directors, which set executive pay.

In the past year, he says, "Shareholders found their voice."

The typical CEO got stock awards worth $3.6 million in 2011, up 11 percent from the year before. Cash bonuses fell about 7 percent, to $2 million.

The value of stock options, as determined by the company, climbed 6 percent to a median $1.7 million. Options usually give the CEO the right to buy shares in the future at the price they're trading at when the options are granted, so they're worth something only if the shares go up.

Profit at companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index rose 16 percent last year, remarkable in an economy that grew more slowly than expected.

CEOs managed to sell more, and squeeze more profit from each sale, despite problems ranging from a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating to an economic slowdown in China and Europe's never-ending debt crisis.

Still, there wasn't much immediate benefit for the shareholders. The S&P 500 ended the year unchanged from where it started. Including dividends, the index returned a slender 2 percent.

Donald wins at Wentworth to regain No. 1 ranking

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? Luke Donald replaced Rory McIlroy at No. 1 in the rankings for the third time in 10 weeks, successfully defending his title in the BMW PGA Championship. It also lifted his hopes of finally capturing a major at the U.S. Open next month.

Displaying his trademark consistency with his driver and putter, Donald won the biggest event on the European Tour by four strokes. The Englishman shot a 4-under 68 at Wentworth on Sunday for his fourth straight round under 70, leaving him at 15 under.

It was Donald's second victory of the year, following one at the Transitions Championship in March on the PGA Tour. Last year at Wentworth, he took the top spot in the world from Lee Westwood when he beat Westwood in a playoff.

"There's something sweet about going 12 months and still being No. 1," Donald said. "It's an indication that I'm doing the right things."

Donald held a two-shot lead over Justin Rose when he began his final round in sunny conditions and said he felt tense in the opening stretch of holes, culminating in a bogey 6 on the long fourth hole. A birdie for Rose at the same hole drew the players even at 10 under. With Peter Lawrie and Paul Lawrie within two shots at that stage, a tight finish seemed likely.

Donald made sure that didn't happen. He rediscovered his putting touch to birdie four of the next seven holes, including a 30-footer on No. 10 that drew cries of "Luuuuke!" from the gallery and left Rose three shots behind.

Donald had the luxury of strolling down No. 18 with a four-shot cushion. He suddenly had the aura of the best player in the world.

Rose missed a short birdie putt at the last hole to finish with a 70 and tied for second with Paul Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion who had a 66 ? tied with George Coetzee for the lowest round of the day.

"There were no loose shots coming down the stretch. And with his short game and him making 20- and 30-footers, he's tough to beat," Rose said, referring to his Ryder Cup colleague.

Not only did a sixth victory in 15 months earn Donald $950,000, it also gave him a big boost before the U.S. Open in San Francisco.

"I feel I am getting closer. Every time I get a success like this, it adds to my confidence. These victories are key to bringing that confidence to the majors," said the 34-year-old Englishman, who topped the money lists both sides of the Atlantic in 2011. "It's putting four rounds together like I did this week."

It's the sixth change at the top of the rankings between Donald and McIlroy in 12 weeks. McIlroy missed the cut at Wentworth after a second-round 79.

Donald became the third player, after Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie, to retain the title at this tournament, and it marked the first time he has won an event twice in a row.

I feel that when I'm playing well, I'm hard to beat. But I think there could be 20, 25 guys who would say that," Donald said.

Scores were significantly lower than Saturday, when the field had to contend with wind of up to 30 mph.

Peter Lawrie birdied the last hole to leave him alone in fourth place. South Africa's Branden Grace, a three-time winner on the European tour this year, was a shot further back in fifth.

Wentworth course designer Ernie Els, who apologized for his expletive-laced outburst about the state of the greens Saturday, tied for seventh with Marcel Siem and Francesco Molinari. Siem drew perhaps the day's biggest cheer when he made a hole-in-one at No. 2.

Sadly however, there isn't any new word on the rollout schedule past the update Moto detailed on the 18th. The first ?Men In Black? was an instant comedic classic. The premise has always been fun: A CIA-like, covert ops agency that keeps tabs on bizarre alien life forms that live among us and runs pest control on the more dangerous and ill-intentioned ones. Its brother in concept was ?Ghostbusters.?

The main foundation that the MIB movies stood on, however, was always the comic chemistry between leads Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. So what could possibly go wrong with this formula? Threequel-itis, that?s what. MIB 1 was great, MIB 2 not so much, MIB 3?just not cuttin? the mustard.

Boris The Animal (Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords fame) is a particularly hideous alien, replete with zipper-like skin harboring dart-throwing killer ticks, reminiscent of the nasty face-hugger larvae in the Alien film series. He gets broken out of prison with a smuggled time-travel device and goes back to the future looking for Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), who was responsible for putting Boris on lockdown and lopping off an arm.

There ensues extensive time travel by Agent J (Will Smith) to help and protect partner K. The act of returning to the year 1969 turns up a younger version of Agent K, played by Josh Brolin. The whole movie is a time-travel bonanza, to eliminate the ghastly Boris before he can sic his ticks on Agent K.

The trappings are all too familiar by now: the black suits, the sunglasses, the cool cars, and the ?neuralyzer? that erases ordinary people?s memories after they?ve crossed paths with the aliens among us. It feels like all these things have maybe overstayed their welcome a bit. What?s the phrase? ?It?s so 2002.?

Whereas MIB aliens have always been freaky and somewhat disgusting in a friendly, fun sort of way, Boris The Animal?s ticks crawl around in the gore genre. The original MIB was kid-friendly, more or less, but Boris is pure gross-out and nowhere near as funny as ?Edgar,? the giant galactic cockroach antagonist played by Vincent D?Onofrio in the original film.

Again, the best thing about a MIB film is normally the odd-couple chemistry of Smith the clown and Jones the straight man. The original had novelty, plus great situations like deadpan-meister Jones saying to an alien bug in full-threat display, ?Put up your arms and all your flippers.?

Here, even the effusiveness of Smith and the taciturn stoicism of Jones have gone a tad stale. Not to mention other script clunkers such as: ?You?re going to be late for your meeting with the Viagrans. They have a revolutionary new pill.?

To list some of the good things, while 3-D is rapidly becoming less and less interesting due to the way it skyrockets ticket prices, the 3-D effects are good here. There?s also the funny concept of Chinese restaurants secretly substituting alien fish species on the menu.

The best thing about the movie, however, is Josh Brolin playing a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones. Physically, they?re dead ringers for each other, and Brolin clearly had an actor?s dream experience of studying and interpreting Tommy Lee.

All in all, it looks good, it has good concepts, and it should have killed as a comedic film. One waits for the payoff. And waits. Boris is fairly gross. The rest of it is fairly boring.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 now up for pre order in Canada for $349.99, will be out on June 22

The Wi-Fi-only Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is now up for pre-order in Canada, courtesy of Future Shop. The Android-powered tablet announced at MWC in February will set you back $349.99. That's actually quite cheap for a 10-inch tablet, but the Galaxy Tab 2 isn't that much of an upgrade compared to its predecessor, despite its name.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will become available in Canada on June 22. So you have plenty of time left to pre-order one, in case you need to be among the first Canadians to get their hands on it. The advertised version comes with 16 GB of built-in storage space.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is identical in almost all respects to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, except it has support for microSD cards, runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and is slightly redesigned (to be patent-proof, we assume). Uninteresting specs aside, that's a really decent price, so if you've been looking for a 10-inch Android tablet that doesn't break the bank, you may want to consider this.
