LOS ANGELES ? Matthew McConaughey is engaged to marry his longtime girlfriend, Camila Alves.
The 42-year-old actor proposed to the Brazilian model on Christmas Day. He announced the move in a tweet that included a photo of the couple kissing and read, "just asked camila to marry me, merry Christmas."
McConaughey's publicist confirmed the engagement Tuesday.
McConaughey and Alves have two children together, son Levi and daughter Vida.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The New Year's countdown to the moon has begun.
NASA said Wednesday that its twin spacecraft were on course to arrive back-to-back at the moon after a 3?-month journey.
"We're on our way there," said project manager David Lehman of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $496 million mission.
The Grail probes ? short for Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory ? won't land on the lunar surface. Instead, they were poised to slip into orbit to study the uneven lunar gravity field.
Grail-A was scheduled to arrive on New Year's Eve, followed by Grail-B on New Year's Day.
Lehman said team members won't celebrate until both probes are safely in orbit.
It's been a long voyage for the near-identical Grail spacecraft, which traveled more than 2? million miles (3.22 million kilometers) since launching in September. Though the moon is relatively close at about 250,000 miles (402317.35 kilometers)away, Grail took a roundabout way to save on costs by launching on a small rocket.
Once at the moon, the probes will spend the next two months tweaking their positions before they start collecting data in March. The pair will fly in formation at an altitude of 34 miles (54.72 kilometers) above the surface, with an average separation of 124 miles (199.55 kilometers).
The mission's chief scientist, Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said many aspects of the moon remain a mystery despite being well studied.
"We actually know more about Mars ... than we do about our own moon," Zuber said.
One puzzle scientists hope to solve is why the moon's far side is more hilly than the side that always faces Earth. Research published earlier this year suggested that Earth once had dual moons that collided and formed the moon that people gaze at today.
Despite the wealth of new knowledge expected from the mission, NASA has no near-term plans to send astronauts back to the moon. The Obama administration last year nixed the idea in favor of landing astronauts on an asteroid and eventually Mars.

Robinson exit to cost New York Times over $15 million (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Janet Robinson, who will step down as chief executive of the New York Times Co on December 31, will receive an exit package in excess of $15 million, according to people familiar with the situation.
In addition to a $4.5 million consulting fee, the Times Co will pay Robinson $10.9 million in pension benefits that she accrued over 28 years of service, they said.
According to a regulatory filing, Times Co's policy previously stipulated that Robinson, 61, would not be eligible for full pension benefits until she was 63 and had been with the company for 30 years. But people familiar with the matter said the Times Co agreed to pay out the full amount as part of her separation agreement.
Taken together, Robinson is walking away with just under $15 million exclusive of the value of the stock options she accumulated over her tenure with the company. The details of her severance agreement, which would also include her base salary, performance bonus, and stock options, are expected to be disclosed in the Times Co's 10K regulatory filing in March.
Against the backdrop of an 80 percent decline in the Times Co's stock over her seven-year tenure as CEO, the size of Robinson's exit package prompted some criticism in the newsroom. Times Co shares are down 25 percent this year alone.
But Robinson is getting less than half of the $37.1 million Craig Dubow received from a combination of severance, pension, disability, and stock payments when he retired as Gannett Inc's CEO in October, after six years at the helm of the newspaper publisher and amid similarly dismal financial results.
FRICTION WITH SULZBERGER
While the Times Co has not given an official reason for Robinson's sudden decision to retire, people familiar with the matter said it was not related to an impending financial event such as a big decline in advertising sales or digital subscriptions or a large quarterly loss.
Some newsroom staffers believe that Robinson's efforts to "raise her profile" were interpreted by Arthur Sulzberger Jr, the family scion and company chairman, as an unwelcome power grab. They say that Robinson pushed for a larger publicity effort around the business side after seeing the attention heaped on the newspaper when Jill Abramson took over as editor-in-chief.
Robinson embarked on an outreach effort that included speaking engagements at recent UBS and Goldman Sachs media conferences, hosting lunches for investors and analysts at the company's Lorenzo Piano-designed headquarters, and conducting editorial meetings with Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg and others.
The aim of these meetings was to tell the story of how the Times Co's business has recovered since 2008, highlighting its quick repayment of a $250 million loan from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, its sale of noncore assets, and its successful implementation of a digital paywall, among other things.
"She wanted to convince investors to come back to us; that we had turned the corner so they should buy the stock again - that was the objective," said one source.
Though Robinson and Sulzberger had worked cordially and efficiently together as CEO and chairman, sources said friction has been building between the two recently for reasons ranging from their differing management styles to how Wall Street interpreted their respective roles to Sulzberger wanting a leader with more digital acumen.
Whether Robinson's PR efforts represented the breaking point for Sulzberger is unclear, however.
"Arthur is the operating head of the company, he makes the final decisions," said longtime Times Co-watcher Alex Jones, author of "The Trust" about the company. "Janet wouldn't be out doing anything without his blessing."

NORAD Santa Trackers Have Record Holiday
DENVER ? Santa Claus set records Christmas Eve he raced across the globe on his on his traditional holiday mission.
Santa tracking volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado said they fielded about 102,000 telephone queries beginning early Saturday on his progress, breaking the previous mark of 80,000.
And his NORAD Facebook page recorded about 999,000 "likes," compared with 716,000 a year ago. Twitter followers increased from about 53,000 last year more than 89,000.
Officials said records set this year were likely generated by people passing the word as well as social media interest.
"I think what happens is that every year the ones the participated" tells others, Canadian Navy Lt. Al Blondin. "There's word of mouth."
Volunteers at NORAD Tracks Santa said kids started calling at 4 a.m. Saturday to find out where Santa was.
"The phones are ringing like crazy," Lt. Cmdr. Bill Lewis said Saturday.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call Santa on a hotline, but the number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.
The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on Santa's progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas from a control center at Peterson.
First lady Michelle Obama was among the volunteers for a second year in a row. She took about 10 calls from her family's holiday vacation in Hawaii. Lewis said Obama's voice didn't throw any of the phoning children.
"They all just asked run-of-the-mill stuff. They wanted to know about Santa," Lewis said.
After visiting many nations, Santa's first stop in the U.S. came at 9:02 p.m. MST in Atlanta. Blondin said.
The NORAD website said Santa then set a generally westward course, making numerous stops including Cleveland, Denver and San Francisco. He later passed through Hawaii and Alaska before setting his home course for the North Pole.
In addition to NORAD's Santa website and Facebook and Twitter pages, Santa this year has a new tracking app for smart phones. The app includes the Elf Toss, a game similar to Angry Birds. Blondin said there had been more than 700,000 downloads.

Girl Scouts troops disband after chapter says it will allow transgendered 7-year-old
Leaders of three troops of Girl Scouts quit their posts and disbanded the troops after the organization?s Colorado chapter allowed a transgendered 7-year-old to join.
The troop leaders, all affiliated with a Christian school in Louisiana, resigned in protest of the Colorado chapter?s decision to allow participation from any child who identifies as a girl, The Christian Post reported.
Controversy erupted when Felisha Archuleta tried to enroll her son, Bobby Montoya, who identifies as a girl, in a Girl Scouts troop in Denver.
When a local troop leader refused, saying Bobby wasn?t allowed to join because he had ?boy parts,? Archuleta appealed to the leadership of the Colorado chapter, the mother previously told the Daily News.
The organization reviewed the troop leader?s decision and opted to enforce its policy of inclusion for transgendered children, The Christian Post reported.
?If a child identifies as a girl and the child?s family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout,? the chapter said in a statement.
Rachelle Trujillo, vice president of communication for Girl Scouts of Colorado, added that the troops ?don?t require any proof of gender,? the Christian Post reported.
Archuleta never enrolled Bobby in the Colorado troop, but the troop leaders in Louisiana were furious over the chapter?s ruling.
Susan Bryant-Snure, one of the leaders who resigned, called the decision ?extremely confusing? and said it could create an ?almost dangerous situation? for other children, according to The Christian Post.
?This goes against what we believe,? she said.

Celebrate the holidays with huge App Store games sales (Appolicious)
Every year, as the Christmas holiday approaches, the iTunes App Store sees a whole lot of games sales. After a fast one pulled by Electronic Arts last year, just about every developer on the iOS platform has slashed the prices of their games ahead of Christmas.
The reason for the sales (other than holiday cheer) is that at a certain point approaching Christmas and New Year?s in the U.S., Apple freezes the App Store. That means that for several days, the prices on the App Store are locked, as are its Top Charts. It?s those charts that are a really big deal to developers ? when an app appears on the Top Paid charts, for example, they tend to do a whole lot of business. So dropping the price on an app to get it on the chart can earn developers a coveted spot for days once Apple freezes iTunes.
EA pulled this trick last year, dropping just about its entire game catalogue to free or $0.99. That allowed EA games to flood the top charts on iTunes with a bunch of its titles all through the holiday freeze. This caused lots of games to miss out on holiday sales while EA cleaned up.
The good news is that EA has dropped just about its entire app catalogue down to the buck range again this year. You can find tons of games, including EA?s much-lauded Dead Space, just by searching ?Electronic Arts? in the App Store. But rather than let EA game the App Store again this year, lots of other developers are dropping the prices on their games, too.
Gameloft, for one, has sliced the prices of tons of games, including N.O.V.A. 2 and UNO. Not all of its newest games are seeing discounts, but there are still some quality titles that can be found by searching ?Gameloft.? Another big iOS game maker, Telltale Games, has cut prices for many of its point-and-click adventure titles including its Hector: Badge of Carnage titles and the five episodes of Back to the Future: The Game.
Even smaller studios are reducing the prices of their games. Jelly Defense maker iDreams has cut its catalogue, bringing 10 iPhone and iPad games down to just a buck. Crescent Moon Games, the studio behind role-playing title Aralon: Sword and Shadow and Gears, has also gotten in on the dollar bandwagon.
Over the next few days, it?s worth it to kick around the App Store or check our Price Cuts and look for more games on sale, because there are likely to be sales from publishers such as Capcom, Ubisoft, Disney Interactive and others in the works. Now is the perfect time to grab great games apps (or give them as gifts). You?ll see the best prices of the year over the last week, so make sure you?re paying attention.

Oil on Wednesday (Dec. 21) traded near its highest in a week in New York, on signs that the U.S. economy will be spared a recession and amid growing pressure on Iran to curtail its nuclear program, Bloomberg News reported.
Futures were little changed after rising as much as 1.3 percent. The American Petroleum Institute showed crude inventories dropped to the lowest in almost two years. Analysts in a Bloomberg News survey predicted the U.S. Energy Department will say later Tuesday that supplies fell 2.13 million barrels. The February contract surged 3.4 percent on Tuesday, on U.S. housing data that beat estimates, unexpected growth in German business confidence and concern that shipments from Iran may be curbed.
"Oil has been strengthening as we get more positive U.S. economic data, such as housing starts, along with a recovery in the euro and the possibility of Iranian reprisals," said Robert Montefusco, senior broker at Sucden Financial Ltd. in London.
Crude for February delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange was at $97.28 a barrel at 1:32 p.m. London time, up 4 cents, after rising as much as $1.26 to $98.50, the highest since Dec. 14. On Tuesday, the contract climbed $3.19 to $97.24. Front-month futures have risen 6.5 percent this year after gaining 15 percent in 2010.
Brent oil for February settlement on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange was down 23 cents at $106.50 a barrel after rising $1.03, or 1 percent, to $107.76 a barrel. The European benchmark contract was at a premium of $9.27 to New York-traded West Texas Intermediate grade. The spread widened to a record $27.88 on Oct. 14.
President Barack Obama?s administration and European Union governments are seeking help from Arab and Asian allies to reduce Iran?s oil revenues. EU nations, the U.S. and Asia-Pacific allies discussed possible measures in Rome on Tuesday and agreed to increase pressure on Iran, the world?s No. 3 crude exporter in 2010, to abandon its suspected nuclear weapons program, according to an Italian Foreign Ministry statement.
U.S. crude inventories fell to 330 million barrels last week, the lowest since the period ended Jan. 22 last year, the industry-funded API said Tuesday.
Gasoline stockpiles decreased 394,000 barrels to 213.9 million, based on the API data.

Time Warner Cable to launch HBO Go (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Time Warner Cable Inc is set to provide the online offerings of pay-TV provider HBO in the next month, potentially putting more pressure on rival online services such as Netflix.
Time Warner Cable, which has a big presence in markets such as New York and Los Angeles, said that under an agreement reached with HBO on Friday it would offer the latest online video services from HBO Go and Max Go to its customers in the next month.
Time Warner will would run a brief trial service before the online services become available for no extra charge to all its customers who subscribe to the premium HBO and Cinemax channels. Cinemax, which specializes in movies is owned by HBO. HBO is owned by Time Warner Inc.
Under the agreement about 1,400 shows will be available on line to subscribers of HBO while MAX GO, offers more than 400 titles of Cinemax programming online. (Reporting by Sinead Carew; editing by Carol Bishopric)

Android Market reaches ten billionth download, sells Minecraft, Swiftkey X, others for a dime
Happy milestone, Android Market! It's a busy place, full of hustle and bustle -- so much so, in fact, that the applications plaza for Google's mobile OS just had its ten billionth app downloaded. In honor of hitting this mark, it's passing the savings on to you, placing ten apps on sale for ten cents. The sale will last for ten days (notice a theme?), so procrastinators will have a little extra time to decide which ones are worth a dime. Cellular Abroad International Hotspot
American gadgets don't travel well overseas. This we know: When we take our phones and hotspots abroad, we're often socked by such astronomical roaming charges that they're really only good for emergency use. Buying local SIM cards is a decent solution if you're traveling to a place where you speak the language, or you're fine with voice and text, but we've had way too much trouble configuring data services in non-English-speaking countries to recommend that path.
So we strongly recommend renting a wireless hotspot or buying a roaming SIM card if you need data on the go. Long-time wireless rental firm Cellular Abroad recently started out renting hotspots to compete with industry leader XCom Global (4 stars), so we took one of Cellular Abroad's hotspots over to the UK for a few days to check it out?with good results, for the most part.
Pricing
For its base price, Cellular Abroad offers unlimited data in Israel and the UK; 10GB in Italy, 2GB in Australia, 1GB in France and China, 250MB in Germany, and "30-60 MB" in 130 other countries. That's more countries than XCom covers, but XCom offers truly unlimited data in its 67 countries.
Hotspot prices vary wildly from country to country. In general, they're more expensive than XCom for trips of less than about two weeks, and less expensive for longer trips. That's because Cellular Abroad's daily fees get lower faster for longer trips. You'll be laying out at least $70 no matter what, though.
It's easy to create scenarios where one service is cheaper than the other. For a three-day trip to London, XCom's hotspot costs only $59.80 while Cellular Abroad's costs $140. But for a 14-day trip, XCom charges $201 while Cellular Abroad charges $168. For a one-week trip to China, XCom charges $119.60 while Cellular Abroad charges $103.?In limited-data countries, you can recharge the hotspot plan. A $59 voucher gets you another 30-60MB in many countries, according to Cellular Abroad; there are also less-expensive vouchers for larger amounts of data in a few places.
But there's a very big catch. In some countries, Cellular Abroad's per-megabyte prices are totally unaffordable. One megabyte of data costs $51.08 in Jordan, $32.46 in Ukraine, and $21.54 in Guatemala. It's not even worth offering a service at those rates.
Another competitor, Maxroam, offers per-megabyte rates that are often lower than Cellular Abroad's. But Maxroam doesn't rent hotspots, so you'd have to buy an unlocked hotspot; the Huawei E585 that Cellular Abroad uses costs $126 at Expansys USA. Whether that still results in savings depends on how many megabytes you use.
Cellular Abroad charges $29.96 for two-day shipping, or $12.88 for ground shipping if you order two weeks in advance. XCom's two-day shipping price is the same, but the other company offers free shipping if you order ten days in advance.
Performance and Conclusions
My hotspot came in a bulky, zippered cloth case. I received a Huawei E585 hotspot with a logo for the "3" wireless carrier on the front, even though it was loaded with a T-Mobile UK SIM card. It came along with a belt clip and UK charger. The hotspot has a sticker on the back showing how to use it, and an OLED display on the front showing connectivity, battery status and data transfer rates. I love the display, which let me parcel out my battery usage throughout the day, something I found harder to do with XCom's displayless Novatel hotspot.
Battery life was pretty standard for a hotspot at something north of four hours of solid use. XCom offers an optional second battery for $2.45/day, though, which I would have liked to see here.
Using the hotspot is pretty simple: turn it on, punch in the password on your laptop or phone, and connect. But I found coverage and speeds around the Excel convention center in East London to be spotty and unreliable. Within the convention center, I often had trouble getting a connection. I didn't have any issues in my hotel room, though, where I got a clear 1-2.5Mbps down on the HSPA 7.2 hotspot. It was enough to do what I needed to get done.
Cellular Abroad's hotspot, like XCom's, works pretty much as advertised out of the box. You need to decide between providers based on pricing and data limits for your destinations. For short trips to one of XCom's 67 countries, XCom's service will give you better value. It's really nice to have unlimited data and not worry about counting your bits and bytes. And if all you're looking for is smartphone data in non-XCom countries, make sure to compare the prices at other roaming SIM companies like Maxroam. Cellular Abroad's service becomes valuable on longer trips to select countries. It's definitely worth looking at.
As you check out roaming data options, it's also worth looking at Boingo Mobile (3.5 stars), a super-cheap ($8/month) global network of Wi-Fi hotspots. Since Wi-Fi isn't as pervasive as 3G, though, make sure to check all your destinations on Boingo's site. I found Boingo's Wi-Fi to be almost everywhere in London, for instance, but almost nowhere in Granada, Spain. In some places, there's just no beating the convenience of 3G.

LONDON (AP) ? A British lawmaker has compared the business ethics of some of Britain's tabloids to a notorious Nazi concentration camp at a Parliamentary hearing on newspaper excesses.
The shocking comparison was made Monday by Conservative Party lawmaker Zac Goldsmith, who testified along with "Four Weddings and a Funeral" star Hugh Grant, comedian Steve Coogan and ex-Formula One racing chief Max Mosley.
When asked if judges ruling in libel or privacy cases should consider whether their decisions might lead to the financial collapse of newspapers found to be at fault, Goldsmith said that "immoral or unethical" businesses should either change or go out of business.
"No one said that Auschwitz should have been kept open because it created jobs," said Goldsmith, referring to the Nazi death camp in Poland.
As part of an inquiry into phone hacking by Britain's tabloids, the Parliamentary committee is gathering evidence about the value of privacy laws and the use of legal gag orders that have been accused of stifling the media.
Media outlets have expressed alarm at the increasing use of injunctions and so-called "super-injunctions" ? court orders which not only ban reporting of details of a specific case, but often forbid any public mention that an injunction exists.
Goldsmith's private life became the subject of tabloid scrutiny during the break up of his marriage in 2010 . He told the panel he had previously secured a court injunction to prevent reporting of the fact his email account, and those of his then wife and his sister, had been hacked. The legislator has previously discussed how he took the legal action amid fears newspapers would disclose contents of the emails.
Britain's phone hacking scandal, which has exposed how the private voice mail messages of bereaved parents and celebrity figures were illegally accessed, has led to a raft of inquiries into the country's written press. Britain's broadcast media are scrutinized by a national regulator, while the written media has a system of self-regulation facing criticism for being too lax.
A government commissioned panel, led by judge Brian Leveson, had already taken evidence from Grant, Mosley and Coogan, all of whom have tangled with Britain's tabloids and been vocal in their calls for tighter press regulation.
Grant told lawmakers Monday that he was only able to stop photographers hassling Tinglan Hong, an actress and the mother of his baby daughter, by taking out a court injunction.
The actor said he had first tried to reason with photographers, but was forced to turn to the courts.
"I said do you think this is something grown men should be doing, terrorizing a new mother and her baby? They just said 'Show us the baby'," Grant told the committee hearing.
Grant told lawmakers his car had been vandalized after he had remonstrated with photographers. "I have been arrested twice and had my car Stanley-knifed over every surface once in retribution," he said.
Mosley and Coogan said they were concerned that the ability to constrain the press through the courts was only open to the rich.
Coogan, who starred in movies "Night at the Museum" and "24 Hour Party People," said he had spent around 20,000 pounds ($32,000) in legal fees in an attempt to prevent a newspaper publishing an article about a family member.
A newspaper "was going to publish a story about a member of my family, not about me, that was no way in the public interest," Coogan said. "The correspondence that led to them not publishing cost me between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds."
Mosley won damages from the now-defunct News of The World tabloid after it wrongly alleged he had participated in a Nazi-themed orgy. In a legal case, Mosley acknowledged the orgy but denied it had any Nazi theme.
"I was told if I won, it would cost me tens of thousands of pounds (dollars). If I lost it would cost me one million pounds," Mosley said.
"To put at risk one million pounds is something very few people can do, or would do."
